Mid-American Conference Tournament | Kent State upsets Bowling Green, will play for title

CLEVELAND — The Kent State Golden Flashes delivered the upset of the Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament out of the gate Thursday. The eighth-seeded Flashes, a sub-.500 team in MAC play, knocked off top-seeded Toledo in the opening quarterfinal to advance to the semifinals Friday night against fifth-seeded Bowling Green.

Kent State wins 73-60

Two days, two upsets for defending tournament champion Kent State.

At 17-16, the Flashes will play for an NCAA Tournament berth Saturday night against Akron or Ohio.

Jalen Sullinger scored 22 points and Giovanni Santiago finished with 20 for Kent State. They were a combined 11 of 15 from 3-point range.

Bowling Green's NCAA Tournament drought dating back to 1968 will continue.

Two more Jalen Sullinger 3-pointers increase Kent State's lead to 63-51 with 3:38 left. He has five 3s and a game-high 19 points.

The Flashes, as a No. 8 seed, are on the brink of another championship game.

Marcus Hill helps Falcons fly back in it

Where would Bowling Green be with out Marcus Hill? The junior guard's 3-pointer cuts Kent State's lead to 45-42 with 12:30 left.

Hill has a game-high 20 points and six rebounds.

When is the Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament championship game?

The winner of the No. 8 Kent State (16-16) and No. 5 Bowling Green (20-12) semifinal advances to the tournament championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised by ESPN2. A trip to the NCAA Tournament will be on the line. The opponent will be the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 Akron (22-10) and No. 3 Ohio (20-12).

When did Kent State, Bowling Green each last win a MAC Men's Basketball Tournament championship?

Kent State won last year's MAC Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament where it lost to Indiana. It was the seventh MAC Tournament title all-time for the Flashes. Bowling Green has never won a MAC Tournament title. The Falcons have not qualified for the NCAA Tournament since 1968.
