Michigan State football game vs. Washington to be streamed only, no TV broadcast

A week after moving a showcase home game to Detroit, Michigan State football learned another premier game at Spartan Stadium won’t be televised.

Instead, the Spartans’ game with Washington on Sept. 16 will only air on NBC’s streaming platform, Peacock. It kicks off at 5 p.m., and a program spokesman confirmed there won’t be a local television simulcast.

The NFL, despite its agreement to stream Thursday night games on Amazon Prime, requires those games to be broadcast to over-the-air channels locally in the markets of the two teams playing.

MSU last week agreed to move its season-ending game against Penn State from East Lansing to Ford Field while bumping it up a day to a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Nov. 24, the Friday after Thanksgiving. That game will be NBC’s primetime game on Black Friday.

NBC also will broadcast the MSU game at Ohio State, a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Nov. 11 in Columbus, Ohio. The games with the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions also will be streamed simultaneously on Peacock.

The Spartans open the season with another Friday game, a 7 p.m. start at home against Central Michigan on FS1. Their Sept. 9 game against Richmond is a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Big Ten Network.

MSU’s fourth home game to open the season will be its homecoming game Sept. 23, a 3:30 p.m. kickoff against Maryland. Broadcast information remains to be determined for that one and the Spartans’ Oct. 14 game at Rutgers, which begins at noon in Piscataway, New Jersey.

U-M fans may remember the Wolverines played in the first game on the Big Ten Network, on Sept. 1, 2007. No. 5 Michigan was upset at home, 34-23, in the season opener.

There remains no game times or TV information for these MSU games: Sept. 30 game at Iowa, Oct. 21 at home vs. Michigan, Oct. 28 at Minnesota, Nov. 4 at home vs. Nebraska and Nov. 18 at Indiana.
