Game notes: Michigan State's first loss of the season was a gut punch, but MSU still has a lane to the College Football Playoff. The Spartans, who fell to Purdue, 40-29, last week, can't afford a loss to the Terps. MSU and Maryland did not play last season, but the Spartans have won three straight in this series and nine of the teams' 11 meetings overall. Maryland is coming in on a loss and has lost four of its last five. The Terps couldn't break 20 points but gave up at least 31 (and in some cases more than 50) during this rough stretch. This is likely Michigan State's softest game left with Penn State and Ohio State looming.
