Michigan football flips 2023 defensive lineman Cameron Brandt from Stanford

Michigan Wolverines cheerleader celebrate a touchdown in the first half against the Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Stadium, Oct. 29, 2022.

Just when we thought the Michigan football class of 2023 was locked in, there was one more trick up Jim Harbaugh's sleeve.

The team's social media account announced on Wednesday, national signing day, that U-M has flipped three-star defensive lineman Cameron Brandt, who was verbally committed to Stanford.

"It came down to where I thought I fit in the best and where I could see myself at for the next four years," he told 247 Sports' Greg Biggins. "When I looked at everything, that was Michigan for me. I think they can mold and develop me in to the best football player I can be."

“I really like coach Harbaugh a lot but it was the whole staff that impressed me. Everyone was really genuine and kept it real with me the whole time. From a football standpoint, they know what they’re doing there and you can tell why they have been so successful.”

Brandt is the No. 41 defensive lineman in the country and the 24th-best player in California for the class of 2023, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. The Sierra Canyon prospect was sought after by Cal, Arizona and Colorado, among others.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound prospect officially visited U-M on Jan. 20, according to 247 Sports. Brandt verbally committed to Stanford last July, but didn't put his name on the dotted line during the early signing period at the end of December because coach David Shaw and the program parted ways.

That allowed time for U-M's staff, namely defensive line coach Mike Elston, to convert the flip.

Brandt played both ways in high school, but is expected to be a defensive lineman, primarily on the edge, in Ann Arbor. The Chatsworth, California, native appears to round out Michigan's class of 2023 25-man recruiting class; the Wolverines also signed seven Division I transfers, six from Power Five programs.

“They like my overall versatility so they want to be able to move me around and I’m good with that," he told Biggins. "With Michigan, it’s great football and great academics so it’s really the best of both worlds there and I'm very excited about my decision."
