The Mets (65-78) play the second game of a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks (76-69) on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. on SNY.

Mets Notes

  • Jeff McNeil has been one of the Mets' hottest hitters during the month of September, slashing .314/.351/.571 with two home runs, one triple, one double, five runs scored and three RBI over nine games

  • After sitting out Monday night's game following a hit-by-pitch on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, Francisco Alvarez is back in the lineup, batting ninth, and catching. In fact, all of the "Baby Mets" are in the lineup and batting consecutively

  • Speaking of, Ronny Mauricio had a two-run double on Monday night and added another stolen base after walking to leadoff the ninth inning. The most recent call-up now has at least one hit in all but one of his starts since joining the big league club. He's batting sixth and playing second base tonight.

  • DJ Stewart continues to hit as well, doubling in Monday night's loss. The outfielder has made a great showing of himself late in the season and is making a case to be on the roster for next season.

Who is starting for the Mets?

Jose Butto, who is 0-2 in five games (three starts) this season with a 3.86 ERA (1.57 WHIP) to go along with 16 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched.

The 25-year-old looked good in his last outing on Sept. 6 against the Washington Nationals. Butto pitched a career-high 6.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits, one walk and career-high six strikeouts at Nationals Park. He threw 81 pitches (50 strikes) before getting pulled. It was his first start since April 25.

The right-hander has been quite serviceable in a pinch this season, allowing two earned runs or fewer in every start he's made --  an impressive accomplishment considering he still doesn't have much experience in the majors after making just one start in 2022.

Butto will look to keep the good times rolling at Citi Field, where he has a 6.14 ERA over two games (one start) compared to a 2.63 ERA on the road this season.

Who is starting for the Diamondbacks?

Ryne Nelson, who is 7-7 in 25 starts this season with a 5.30 ERA (1.42 WHIP) to go along with 85 strikeouts in 130.2 innings pitched.

Nelson is coming off a better start his last time out on Sept. 7 against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field after two straight clunkers. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, two walks and three strikeouts on just 73 pitches (51 strikes).

All season, the right-hander has been much better on the road than at home. In 14 starts away from Chase Field, the second-year pro is 5-2 with a 3.18 ERA (1.08 WHIP). Meanwhile, across 11 starts in Arizona, the 25-year-old is 2-5 with an abysmal 8.59 ERA (1.95 WHIP).

Nelson faced the Mets back on July 6 at Chase Field and allowed seven earned runs on nine hits, including two home runs, in three innings. New York is hoping for similar results on Tuesday.

Upcoming schedule

The Mets and D-backs continue their series on Wednesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. on SNY.

Joey Lucchesi will start for the Mets, while Arizona throws out Cy Young hopeful RHP Zac Gallen.
