Mets' Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso earn 2023 NL MVP votes
Kodai Senga wasn't the only Met who caught the attention of baseball writers this season, as both Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso earned votes for the 2023 NL MVP Award.
The Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) released their ballots for the NL and AL MVP Awards on Thursday night, as the Atlanta Braves' Ronald Acuna Jr. won in the NL and pending free agent, and Mets target, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels won in the AL. It's the first time ever in BBWAA voting for MVP, dating back to 1931, that the winners in both leagues were unanimous selections.
The voting ballots showed Lindor finishing in ninth place with one sixth-place vote, six seventh-place votes, six eighth-place votes, two ninth-place votes, and one tenth place vote. That gave him a total of 52 points, trailing the Miami Marlins' Luis Arraez in eighth with 67 points and ahead of the Chicago Cubs' Cody Bellinger in tenth with 49 points.
While Alonso finished tied for 17th place with one eighth-place vote. He tied with pitcher Logan Webb of the San Francisco Giants, who also received one eighth-place vote.
It's Lindor's second straight ninth-place finish in MVP voting, as he's now finished top-10 in voting five times during his career, plus a 15th-place finish in 2019. He hit .254 with 31 home runs, 33 doubles, 31 stolen bases, and 98 RBI over 160 games during the 2023 season. The SS is still hunting for his first MVP Award, but did take home his third career Silver Slugger award earlier this offseason.
Alonso finished seventh in voting during his historic rookie season in 2019 and placed in eighth in 2022. His batting average may have seen a dip to .217 in 2023, but the first baseman still totaled 46 homers with 118 RBI over 154 games.
