Mets designate Michael Tonkin for assignment
The Mets are designating reliever Michael Tonkin for assignment following his early-season struggles.
The decision to DFA Tonkin was made in order to add Julio Teheran to the roster after his signing became official.
Tonkin, who nabbed one of the Mets' final spots in the bullpen coming out of spring training, was hit hard in his last two appearances after he tossed two hitless innings on Opening Day.
He allowed two hits and five runs (none earned) in 1.0 inning on April 1 against the Detroit Tigers.
During the Mets' loss during Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Tigers, Tonkin allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) in his inning of work, which was the decisive top of the 11th.
The Mets' hope was that Tonkin would be a reliever who could soak up more than one inning at a time -- something he did often for the Atlanta Braves in 2023.
Instead, his Mets tenure ends after just three appearances.
