Who is starting for the Mets?
Jose Quintana takes the ball looking to earn his first win in a Mets uniform.
While he’s 0-4 since returning from the Injured List, the veteran left-hander has posted a quality start in four of his five outings. Quintana allowed just one run across six innings of work in his effort last weekend against the Braves.
The Cardinals acquired Quintana in a trade with the Pirates ahead of last season’s deadline and he made 12 solid starts for them. He also put together a strong outing in a Wild Card round loss to the Phillies.
Quintana will look to keep the ball rolling for New York in his return to Busch Stadium, where he's posted a career 2.88 ERA.
Who is starting for the Cardinals?
Q and the Mets will be opposed by another veteran in the series opener in Adam Wainwright.
In his 18th, and seemingly final year at the big-league level, the right-hander has struggled mightily for the Red Birds. Through 15 starts, Waino has posted an 8.78 ERA and 2.08 WHIP while allowing a brutal 15.3 H/9.
While he’s struggled for the most part, the big righty put together one of his best starts of the season earlier this year against the Mets at Citi Field. He earned his third win of the year after tossing 6.1 innings (the most he’s thrown) and allowing just three runs on seven hits.
In his career against New York, the 41-year-old has a 4.58 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 75 strikeouts.
Upcoming schedule
The Mets and Cardinals continue their four-game weekend set at Busch Stadium on Friday at 8:15 p.m. on SNY.
Joey Lucchesi (1-0, 4.43 ERA), who has been on the Triple-A IL for about a month, has joined New York to make the start against LHP Zack Thompson (2-4, 3.96 ERA).
