Mets add pitcher Adrian Houser, outfielder Tyrone Taylor in trade with Brewers

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns looked toward his roots to fill a pair of team needs.

According to a report by The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Mets have acquired right-handed starter Adrian Houser and outfielder Tyrone Taylor in a trade with the Brewers for pitching prospect Coleman Crow.

The 30-year-old Houser, who is in his final season of arbitration eligibility, posted an 8-5 record with a 4.12 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 96 strikeouts in 111⅓ innings and 21 starts last season - his seventh in Major League Baseball. He has made at least 21 starts for the Brewers in each of the last three seasons.

Houser, a former second round pick by the Astros in 2011, pitches to contact with two low-90s fastballs, a slider and a curveball. He figures to slot into the back end of the Mets rotation ahead of the 2024 season. MLB Trade Rumors estimates that Houser will receive $5.6 million for the upcoming season before becoming a free agent in 2025.

The move to add Houser could potentially cut into the starting roles for either Tylor Megill or Joey Lucchesi if the Mets make another move to add an ace in free agency. The Mets are heavily involved in the Yoshinobu Yamamoto sweepstakes.

Taylor was a second-round pick by the Brewers out of Torrance High School in California in 2012. Last season, the 29-year-old right-handed hitter slashed .234/.267/.446 with 10 home runs, 35 RBI, 36 runs and nine stolen bases in 81 games.

Taylor played across the outfield last season with the Brewers, including 60 games in right field, 20 in left and eight in center field. He could factor of the bench in a depth role for the Mets, which currently have outfielders Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte and DJ Stewart on the roster.

Crow was acquired by the Mets last June in a trade with the Angels that sent out third baseman Eduardo Escobar. The Mets also received right-handed pitching prospect Landon Marceaux in that deal.

Crow was the Mets' No. 29-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. He underwent Tommy John surgery after just four games for the Angels' Class AA affiliate, the Rocket City Trash Pandas, in 2023 and is expected to miss the upcoming season.
