Memphis Grizzlies scouting reports

No NBA team has done a better job of acquiring talent through the draft in recent years than the Memphis Grizzlies, and that includes late in the first round and in the second round. As such, they have become one of the most fun teams to watch over recent years.

Below, check out our scouting reports for the 2022-23 Memphis Grizzlies players.

Ja Morant

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Electric offensive player… Fearless driving to the rim… Can finish on virtually anyone… Great body control… Flashy playmaker… Has worked on his perimeter shot where it has to be respected… Worth the price of a ticket… Turnover prone… May not have the body to be an elite defender… Can be too reckless looking for the beautiful play… Must develop more efficient shooting to offset athleticism when older.

Jaren Jackson Jr.

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Unique mix of athleticism in the paint and shooting abilities from deep… Splendid quickness for his size… Fluid moves posting up…  Can finish with either hand… Great bounce to protect the rim… Reliable jumper to stretch the court… Terrific defensive player, though he tends to easily get into foul trouble… Soft hands to protect the ball… Can be streaky as a three-point shooter… Has missed a lot of games already due to injury.

Steven Adams

Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

Super strong… Maybe the toughest player to move around in the league… Sets awesome screens to create space for ballhandlers and shooters… Good rebounder… Great finishing alley-oops… Lacks a reliable jumper… One of the worst free-throw shooters in the league… Has become a better passer all of a sudden… Great locker room guy, teammates love having him around.

Tyus Jones

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Rock-solid lead guard who is very trustworthy… Rarely turns the ball over… Under one turnover per game for his career, which is crazy for a point guard… Nevertheless, he’s still a good creator… Does well out of the pick-and-roll… Considered to be one of the best backup point guards… Streaky outside shooter… Small in stature and doesn’t have elite athleticism… That hurts him as a finisher near the rim… Tries defensively, but he can only do so much there with physical limitations… Great locker room guy.

Dillon Brooks

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

6-foot-7 swingman with scoring prowess… An expert, stop-on-a-dime mid-range shooter off the dribble… Above-average three-point shooter… But an average athlete with short arms… Makes up for that in the paint by being able to finish with his off-hand… Winning player… Gives full effort on defense… Does a good job against multiple positions… Overly confident at times… Knack for taking bad shots at the worst time.

Danny Green

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

A perfect example of a 3-and-D player… Skilled catch-and-shoot scorer… Plenty of experience on the big stage… Very active on the defensive end… Low-maintenance player… Always a great fit in winning teams… Lacks explosiveness… Could be a streaky shooter on occasion… Has lost a step on defense… Still useful floor spacer on the floor, but no longer reliable… Questions about how he’ll return from major knee injury.

Ziaire Williams

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Prototypical size on the wing… Good upside as a shooter thanks to his pretty jumper… But he hasn’t knocked down threes at even an average rate yet, either in college or the NBA… Fluid athlete at his size with solid lateral speed… Needs to add strength… Good vert and can throw down some dunks… Decent ball-handling… Game needs refinement but upside is there.

Brandon Clarke

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Slightly undersized at 6-foot-8 hovering around 210 pounds for a power forward… But makes up for it with high-level athleticism and instincts… Especially on defense… Picks up tons of steals and blocks… Makes winning plays… Can hit threes with his feet set… But it’s not his specialty… Great hands… Finishes well around the rim, despite size… Elite out of the pick-and-roll.

Jake LaRavia

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Not much of an athlete but more than makes up for that with great feel for the game… Can knock down shots with his feet set from the outside… An adept off-ball cutter… Keeps the ball moving and makes smart passes… Gives effort defensively… Doesn’t shoot as well off the dribble and just an average ball-handler.

David Roddy

Daniel Dunn-USA TODAY Sports

A power forward in a small forward’s body… Great strength and a huge, sturdy frame allow him not to get pushed around by bigger foes down low… Efficient scorer, both from two-point and three-point range… Good lateral agility, so he can legitimately guard a few different positions.

John Konchar

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Stands 6-foot-4 but almost plays like a frontcourt player… Fantastic rebounder for his size… Averaged nearly nine rebounds in the G League… Good playmaker… Surprising athleticism… Tenacious driver of the basketball… Finishes over length and through contact… Poor outside shooter… Good ball-handler.

Desmond Bane

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Elite shooter even if his form isn’t picture-perfect… Good instincts offensively and does very well out of the pick-and-roll… Can knock down shots off the dribble, not just with his feet set… Has improved his dribbling and playmaking over the years… All-Star potential… Has really expanded his game every year to become more than just a spot-up shooter… Fights defensively but lacks wingspan to make a huge impact there.

Santi Aldama

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

Big man with skill who can space the floor some from three… Smooth low-post game where he does some of his scoring… Can rebound and protect the rim, though not at elite levels… Isn’t an ideal switch defender in the modern NBA… Not the most consistent with his outside shot, though it is improving.

Xavier Tillman

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Undersized big man at 6-foot-8 but one who plays with a lot of toughness… Solid rebounder even at his size… Can make plays out of the frontcourt… Smooth scorer down low… Some versatility on defense… Can guard bigs and some wings… Lacks athleticism… Inconsistent shooter from the outside… Form isn’t broken, however, and is at least willing to shoot from deep.

Kennedy Chandler

Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

One-and-done player at Tennessee in the NCAA who had a productive lone season of college… Very quick point guard with a good amount of skill who can score off the dribble and create for others… Better finisher in the open court than in the halfcourt… Has decent jumping ability… A bit wild with the ball… Impact defensively jumping passing lanes and picking pockets… Needs to improve outside shooting consistency.

Kenneth Lofton

Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

Very productive player in college… Lacks ideal height for a big man and is on the heavier side… But can really produce thanks to his smooth southpaw game… Can score out of the post and hit face-up midrange jumpers… Carves out space and boxes out well, making him a very good rebounder… High-energy player on offense and on the glass… Needs to develop as a three-point shooter and as a passer, as he looks to score more often than not… Not much of a defender and can get exposed on switches.

Vince Williams

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

3-and-D type of swingman with some skill and athletic ability… Very much a role player, as even in college, he didn’t seek out his own shot much… Keeps the ball moving and can make smart passes from time to time… Decent shooter with his feet set… Lacking in the athleticism department and doesn’t have much of a first step.
