MEET THE BRUIN COACH: Holmes has helped shaped several players for college

(Note: This is the second of a three-part series on Bartlesville High assistant football coach Bobby Holmes.)

During his 14 years as a Bartlesville High assistant grid coach, Bobby Holmes has coached or associated with some of the Bruins’ greatest-ever gridders — who have already graduated — to suit up.

This list, starting in the late 2000’s, could include: WR Michael Thompson (Class of 2010, NEO A&M, football, 2 years); WR Garrett Powell (Class of 2010, NEO/Northeastern State); QB Kirby Schoenthaler (Class of 2011, Dartmouth, football, 4 years); LB Mick Miller (Class of 2011, college info unknown); OL Colby Mitchell (Class of 2011, Louisiana-Monroe, football, 4 years); DE Mitch Tate (Class of 2011, University of Oklahoma, football, 4 years); DE Devin Randall (Class of 2011, University of Arkansas, track); FB/LB Jack Wiseman (Class of 2012, Hillsdale College, football, 4 years); RB Calan Crowder (Class of 2013, Missouri State, football, 4 years); OL Tom Wiseman (Class of 2013, All-State, no college football); WR Garrett Hilger (Class of 2013, college info unknown); WR-RB/DB/Returner Slade Nordic (Class of 2014, Pittsburg State, track and football); QB Colton Penrod (Class of 2016, college letter of intent signee); Jarron Hilger (Class of 2016, college info not known); WR/DB A.J. Parker (Class of 2016, Kansas State, 4 years; NFL, Detroit Lions-2 years, currently with San Francisco 49ers); WR A.J. Archambo (Class of 2017, Oral Roberts University, 4 years, baseball); RB DeAndre Young (Class of 2019, sign with Langston University); RB Laken Clowdus (Class of 2020, Friends University, football, ongoing), LB/FB Braeden Winters (Class of 2021, Southeastern Oklahoma State, football, redshirt) and OL Ridge Brewington (Class of 2022, Air Force Academy, football, redshirt).

Some of the Dewey High standouts whose prep careers intersected with Holmes’ time with the Doggers included: RB Hunter Brewer (Class of 2017, Southwestern College, Kan., football); and Faylon Kight (Class of 2018, Coffeyville College, Kan., track).

As mentioned, Holmes was on the staff during two of the greatest four football seasons in school history.

In 2009, the Bruins burst to an 8-2 regular season record (tied with the 1984 team for the best regular season mark in school history to that point), and upset Owasso in the playoffs on their way to a 9-3 final showing. (Most wins ever in a season.)

Six years later, the2015 squad proved almost unbeatable by storming to a 9-1 regular season record and 10-2 overall, both new school marks.

True, Holmes left Bartlesville after the 2014 season in order to coach at Dewey. But, prior to leaving for Dewey, Holmes had been instrumental in developing the sophomores, juniors and seniors on the 2015 Bruin team.

Having witnessed the 2009 and 2015 Bruin teams up close and personal, Holmes perceived similarities between both groups — and said the nucleus of the current Bruin team could be leaning that way.
