Meet the All-Anderson and Pickens area high school girls basketball team, player of year

Meet the All-Anderson and Pickens counties high school girls basketball team, including the Independent-Mail 2024 Player of the year.

Player of Year

Raina McGowens

Wren | Senior

McGowens finished a remarkable six-year varsity career at Wren by leading the Hurricanes to the Class AAA state championship game for the second straight season.

She’s the back-to-back winner of this award.

The 5-foot-10 combo guard averaged 20.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists as Wren went 28-3, including 10-0 in Region 2. She was all-region for the fifth time and all-state for the third time.

If not for the presence of Joyce Edwards, the Camden standout headed to undefeated national champion South Carolina, McGowens might have won a couple of state titles and state player of the year awards of her own.

McGowens, who will play at Furman, is Wren’s all-time leading scorer with 2,270 points. She also finished with 718 rebounds, 501 assists, 385 steals and 70 blocked shots.
