Meet the 2023 T&G Hometeam high school field hockey Super Team

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette, with the Central Mass High School Sports Awards program, is proud to announce the nominees for the Field Hockey Athlete of the Year. The winner will be announced during the live show on Wednesday, June 28 at 7 p.m. at the Hanover Theatre.

During the live show, these nominees will be honored, along with the athletes of the year in 30 other sports. Nominated athletes who RSVP will receive a free ticket to the event thanks to sponsors. Additional tickets may be purchased on the show’s website, which will be coming soon.

The Central Mass High School Awards show is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country. Last year’s show can still be viewed online at this link. This year, one school from the area will win a $1,000 donation to its school’s athletic department. More details on that are coming soon.

Here are the nominees for the Field Hockey Athlete of the Year:

Amelia Blood

Uxbridge High

Freshman, Center Midfielder

With 30 assists, Blood set an Uxbridge single-season record and helped lead the Spartans to their second straight undefeated campaign and Division 4 state championship. Blood, a SWCL first-team all-star, scored in Uxbridge’s 5-0 victory over Manchester-Essex and the Spartans extended their winning streak to 54 games, dating back to 2019. The Spartans finished their spectacular season 23-0-0 and outscored opponents, 156-10. Blood scored 11 goals and ranked among Central Mass. scoring leaders. Her most memorable moment of the season was Uxbridge’s double-overtime win against Monomoy in the state semifinals and helping secure the win on a two-player defensive penalty corner unit. She is the daughter of Matt and Jody Blood of Uxbridge.

Bethie Boone

Lunenburg High

Senior, Forward

With 12 goals and 18 assists, Boone ranked second in Mid-Wach C in scoring and among the leaders in Central Mass. She led the Blue Knights to the winningest record (16-5) in school history and to their first league championship since 2016. Lunenburg advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 4 state tournament. A team captain, Boone was the Mid-Wach C MVP. Beating Ipswich, 2-1, in a Division 4 second-round matchup, her last home game, was Boone’s most memorable moment of the season. Boone is also captain of the basketball team and a member of the lacrosse team. She is undecided on her college plans, but she will study biomedical science. She is the daughter of Steve and Sue Boone of Holden.

Elyse “Ellie” Bouchard

Uxbridge High

Sophomore, Forward

Bouchard earned her second straight T&G Super Team honor after scoring 34 goals and helping the Spartans to their second consecutive undefeated season and Division 4 state championship. With 34 goals and six assists, Bouchard ranked among the Central Mass. scoring leaders. She is a two-time SWCL first-team all-star. Her most memorable moments of the season were registering a hat trick and scoring the winning goal in Uxbridge’s double overtime victory against Monomoy in the state semis, and beating Manchester-Essex, 5-0, in the final. Bouchard scored a goal, and the Spartans finished their tremendous season 23-0-0 and extended their winning streak to 54 games, dating back to 2019. Bouchard is a high honor roll student and secretary of her sophomore class. She is the daughter of Lauren Luke, Adam Luke and Jeff Bouchard.

Kendall Gilmore

Uxbridge High

Freshman, Forward/Mid

Gilmore scored 31 goals and added 16 assists, and helped the Spartans to their second straight undefeated season and Division 4 state championship. She led SWCL in scoring and ranked among the leaders in Central Mass. Her point total was the second-highest single season output in program history. Gilmore is a two-time SWCL first-team all-star. Her most memorable moment of the season was Uxbridge’s double-overtime win against Monomoy in the state semifinals. “The intensity was high,” Gilmore said, “and it was a team effort and (our) best challenge of the season.” Gilmore registered a hat trick in Uxbridge’s first-round win over Westport, and scored in the 5-0 victory over Manchester-Essex in the final. Uxbridge finished 23-0-0 and ran its win streak to 54 dating back to 2019. She is the daughter of Matthew and Shannon Gilmore of Uxbridge.

Kathryn Guertin

Wachusett Regional

Senior, Defender

Guertin keyed Wachusett’s backline, and helped the Mountaineers to the Division 1 state semifinals. Four of Guertin’s six goals were game-winners, and she added two assists. Beating Shrewsbury to capture the Central Mass. Athletic Directors Association (CMADA) Tournament Class A championship was Guertin’s most memorable moment of the season. Guertin helped the Mountaineers limit opponents to 1.39 goals per game. The Mountaineers allowed one goal in their first three state tourney games before falling to Walpole in the semis. Guertin was her team’s MVP and a Mid-Wach A first-team all-star. In the fall, she will attend UMass Lowell, where she will study criminal justice and play field hockey. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Christina Guertin of Jefferson.

Emerson Johnson

Wachusett Regional

Sophomore, Midfielder

With seven goals and 25 assists, Johnson led her team in scoring and helped the Mountaineers to the semifinals of the Division 1 state tournament. Wachusett finished its outstanding season 17-4-2. Beating Franklin, 2-1, in the state quarterfinals was Johnson’s most memorable moment of the season. She assisted on a goal in that game and had two goals and two assists during Wachusett’s state tourney run. She scored the winning goal against Shrewsbury to lift the Mountaineers to the Central Mass. Athletic Directors Association (CMADA) Tournament Class A championship. Johnson is a two-time Mid-Wach A first-team all-star. She is the daughter of Melissa and Dave Johnson of Paxton.

Caraline Lambert

Sutton High

Senior, Goalkeeper

Lambert posted a 1.55 goals against average and 10 shutouts to lead the Suzies to the Division 4 state tournament. She finished her fine career with program records for games (46), wins (37) and shutouts (29). A captain, Lambert enjoyed leading her young teammates this season and helped Sutton to an 11-9-1 record. Lambert posted back-to-back shutouts to open the Central Mass. Athletic Directors Association (CMADA) Class C Tournament. She was a three-time Dual Valley Conference all-star, and helped the Suzies to three DVC titles. In the fall, she will attend the University of New Haven, where she will study fire science/arson investigation and play field hockey. She is the daughter of Adam and Tina Lambert of Sutton.

Bridget McLaughlin

Shrewsbury High

Junior, Center forward

McLaughlin scored 18 goals and added 12 assists, and helped the Colonials to the semifinals of the Division 1 state tournament. McLaughlin, who led Mid-Wach A in scoring, was the league MVP. Her most memorable moment of the season was scoring the winning goal in overtime against Doherty in the second round of the state tournament. The Highlanders scored with 3:07 left in regulation to tie the score, 1-1, and send the game to OT. In the extra session, McLaughlin saw an open lane and called for the ball from her teammate. She had a one-on-one with Doherty’s goalie, shot the ball to the low left corner, and heard it hit the backboard. A Shrewsbury celebration ensued. McLaughlin assisted on Shrewsbury’s first-half goal. McLaughlin also stars in ice hockey for the Colonials. She is the daughter of Karin and Jay McLaughlin of Shrewsbury.

Maddie Mrva

Shrewsbury High

Senior, Midfield

Mrva repeated as a T&G Super Team selection after helping the Colonials reach the semifinals of the Division 1 state tournament. She registered 12 goals and added 12 assists and ranked among the scoring leaders in Mid-Wach A. Mrva was a two-year captain. Her most memorable moment of the season was beating Chelmsford, 1-0, to advance to the state semis, and battling Andover before falling, 2-1. Shrewsbury finished its outstanding season 18-3-2 and atop the Mid-Wach A standings. As a junior, Mrva also earned T&G Super Team honors in lacrosse. In the fall, she will attend Bowdoin College, where she will study economics and play field hockey. She is the daughter of Carrie and Matt Mrva of Shrewsbury.

Hannah Murray

Doherty High

Junior, Center Striker

Murray earned her second straight T&G Super Team honor after leading Central Mass. in scoring and helping the Highlanders to the second round of the Division 1 state tournament. Murray finished with 35 goals and 19 assists and surpassed the career 100-point mark. She was the Inter-High MVP and helped Doherty win the league title and finish 14-4-2. Her most memorable moment of the season was beating Central Catholic, 3-2, in the first round of the state tourney. Murray assisted on the winning goal a minute into overtime. Murray scored 14 goals in Doherty’s first four games and led the Highlanders on an 11-game winning streak to start the season. She is the daughter of Kevin and Colleen Murray of Worcester.

Delaney Wojnarowicz

Junior, Forward/Midfielder

Wojnarowicz scored 13 goals and added 17 assists to lead the Central Mass. Conference in scoring and help the Rebels advance to the second round of the Division 3 state tournament. She scored both goal in NDA’s 2-1 win over East Longmeadow in the first round. Notre Dame, which put together an 11-game midseason win streak, finished 15-4-2. Wojnarowicz’s most memorable moment of the season was capturing the Central Mass. Athletic Directors Association (CMADA) Class C championship. Wojnarowicz scored in NDA’s 3-1 win over Sutton. Wojnarowicz was her team MVP. She is the daughter of Katelyn and Matthew Wojnarowicz of Rutland.

Abigail Zacchini

Nashoba Regional

Senior, Center Midfielder

Zacchini capped her illustrious career by earning her third straight T&G Super Team selection and leading the Wolves to the Division 2 state final for the second year in a row. Zacchini scored nine goals and added seven assists as Nashoba finished 14-6-3. Zacchini was a three-time Mid-Wach all-star and this year was a team captain. Her most memorable moment of the season was Nashoba’s 1-0 win over Falmouth in the state quarterfinals. Falmouth was in Nashoba’s defensive circle for an entire quarter and had numerous corners, but the Wolves, a top defensive team all year, held off the Clippers. Nashoba allowed just 18 goals this season. In the fall, Zacchini will attend Rutgers University, where she will study criminology/forensics and looks forward to playing Big Ten field hockey. She is the daughter of Edward and Lori Zacchini of Bolton.
