Meet the 2023 big-school football Super Team for Lubbock, South Plains

Here is the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's 2023 big-school football Super Team, which is comprised of South Plains players in Class 4A through 6A.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Bobby Ross, Jr., RB, Estacado

Ross continued to be an offensive force while adding duties on the defensive line. He tallied 1,565 yards and 22 touchdowns on 149 carries, an average of 10.5 yards per attempt.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Jaylen Cottrell, Sr., DL, Seminole

Cottrell recorded 109 tackles, including 26 for a loss. He also had 10 sacks and one interception.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Sione Vaea, So., DL, Lubbock-Cooper

Vaea made an instant impact in the middle of the Pirates' defensive line. He totaled 90 tackles (21 solo), including seven for a loss, eight sacks and six quarterback hurries.

COACH OF THE YEAR

William Blaylock, Estacado

In his second season at the helm, Blaylock led the Matadors to the third round for the first time since 2019. Estacado finished 10-3 after a loss to eventual state-semifinalist Decatur. It was the most victories since that 12-win campaign four seasons before.

FIRST TEAM

Wyatt Holmstrom, Jr., QB, Seminole

In his first season at Seminole, Holmstrom was 269 of 377 passing (71.4%) for 3,221 yards, 41 TDs and eight interceptions. He also ran 124 times for 576 yards and seven TDs.

Jayden Hibbler, Sr., RB, Lubbock-Cooper

In his first season at Lubbock-Cooper, Hibbler ran for 1,273 yards and 23 TDs on 149 attempts. He added 35 catches for 131 yards and three TDs.

Ja'Marcus Smith, Sr., RB, Monterey

Smith led the team with 1,153 yards and 12 TDs on 188 carries. He also had five catches for 34 yards.

Logan McCormick, So., WR, Seminole

McCormick made 78 catches for 1,178 yards and 22 TDs. He also ran for 160 yards and seven TDs on 28 attempts.

Leyton Stone, Jr., WR, Frenship

Stone had 94 catches for 1,658 yards and 23 TDs.

Jacob Delgado, Jr., TE, Estacado

Delgado was the lead blocker for an offense that surpassed 3,500 rushing yards, finishing with a 92% grade.

Darius Alexander, Sr., OL, Estacado

Alexander graded at 97% with 87 knockdowns.

Holton Hendrix, Sr., OL, Lubbock-Cooper

Hendrix, a Texas Tech signee, graded at 92% with 23 pancake blocks.

Greyson Pelsor, Sr., OL, Frenship

Pelsor graded better than 80% for the season.

Brian Peters, Sr., OL, Seminole

Peters finished with a 92% grade and 14 pancakes.

Vershaunndrick Smith, Fr., OL, Estacado

Smith had a 91% grade with 28 knockdowns.

Caton Cramer, So., utility, Seminole

Cramer spent time at receiver, running back, tight end and quarterback. He caught 75 passes for 757 yards and six TDs, adding 123 carries for 699 yards and 13 TDs.

Isaiah Belgara, Sr., DL, Estacado

Belgara recorded 69 tackles, including eight for a loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery.

Tony Cagle, Sr., DL, Snyder

Cagle had 46 tackles, including 10 for a loss, four sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Taj'E Whitfield, Sr., DL, Lubbock High

Whitfield totaled 67 tackles (26 solo), including 11 for a loss, and five sacks in nine games.

Rowin Donaldson, Jr., LB, Seminole

Donaldson posted 90 tackles, including 20 for a loss, four interceptions, a forced fumble and two blocked kicks.

Kei'Sean Harris, Sr., LB, Estacado

Harris led the team with 128 tackles, including 10 for a loss. He had nine sacks, an interception, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries — returning two for TDs.

Willie Parker, Sr., LB, Coronado

Parker posted 113 tackles, including 13 for a loss, three sacks and a forced fumble.

Zakavian Washington, Jr., LB, Coronado

Washington recorded 109 tackles, including 15 for a loss, eight sacks, 13 hurries and two fumble recoveries.

Braden Bailey, Jr., DB, Seminole

Bailey had 142 tackles, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a kickoff-return TD.

Dee'Ondric Green, Sr., DB, Estacado

Green posted 35 tackles, including two for a loss, five interceptions, five pass breakups and a punt-return TD.

Vincent Sipowicz, Sr., DB, Lubbock-Cooper

Sipowicz recorded 80 tackles (36 solo), including seven for a loss, two sacks and five hurries.

Donivan Torrez, So., DB, Estacado

Torrez had 71 tackles, including four for a loss, five interceptions, one sack, five pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for a TD.

Cub Patton, Jr., K/P, Lubbock-Cooper

Patton, the district's special teams MVP, was 9 of 12 on field goals with a long of 44 yards. He made 65 of 65 extra points and had 32 touchbacks. He had a 39-yard net average on punts with a long of 62 yards.
