Meet 19 of Section V's best indoor track athletes: Can they repeat as AGR honorees?

We are just getting started when it comes to determining the best indoor track athletes in Section V.

This season's first meets took place December 9, but there are already 19 sprinters, distance runners, hurdlers, throwers, pole vaulters and race walkers in Section V to keep an eye on after they made their way onto Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Teams last school year.

Here is what to know about those standout athletes:

Aiden Bryant

Midlakes sophomore hopes to make it onto a NCAA Division I track and field team in the future. He produced a 46-foot triple jump last winter. Only Manny Sepulveda had a better jump all season, and he has graduated. Bryant also advanced to the outdoor state meet but was beat out for a spot on the AGR spring team.

Avery Brunner

Pittsford Mendon freshman has entered high school with a strong appearance at the indoor state meet on her track resume. She placed fifth in the state weight throw and was second on the season-ending one-time performance leaderboard last winter. She fell short of the outdoor state meet in the spring, when there is a discus throw event instead of the weight throw.

Lauren Curry-Wilburn

Brockport senior has been among national elite race walkers in past seasons. She was runner-up in the 1,500-meter race during the Meet of Champions or overall Section V event but finished second in the state to Sachem East junior Abby Callinan by 1.23 seconds. She is still the one to beat in Section V.

Emma Goodell

Victor freshman has entered high school already a versatile force. She can sprint, jump and race in relays. The 55 hurdles was her strongest event last winter, based on a 15th-place finish at states. Only one athlete was above Goodell on the season-ending leaderboard, AGR indoor and outdoor athlete of the year Camryn Cole, who graduated last spring.

Corintia Griffith

Webster Schroeder senior has been an AGR Athlete of the Year candidate season after season. She set the state indoor triple jump record at 41-11 1/2 last winter, and later came close to the outdoor mark. Two weeks ago, her best jump was 41-7 1/2 and also won a 55 dash race in 7.31. She will compete at Harvard University after graduation.

Paige Harding

Oakfield-Alabama junior excels in the pole vault. She was the overall Section V champion last winter, based on her first-place finish at the indoor state meet qualifier. The jump of 11-6 was the season's best in Section V. She fell short of making the 2023 AGR girls outdoor team.

The underclassman scored 28 points for McQuaid team during sectionals, and later had top-eight finishes at New Balance Nationals in the 55 and 200 dashes.

Elsye Klump

Keshequa senior is a two-time AGR team member. Triple jump has been her best event, and she bounded out to 37-0 1/4, the third-best distance of the season last winter. She was the second-best finisher from Section V at states. Will have one chance to get on to an AGR outdoor team.

Jerry Lewis

There is an opportunity for this Webster Thomas senior to highlight an impressive career. He ran on to the 2022 AGR Boys Cross Country, 2022-23 Boys Indoor Track and 2023 Boys Outdoor Track and Field Teams. He scores for the Titans at middle and distances, plus relays.

Ella Manelis

Last winter's AGR indoor team was the first one made by the Brighton senior, who has a chance to make two more before graduation. The throws are her events. She was an indoor sectional weight throw and shot put champion last year and went on to a 47-10 weight throw at Nike Nationals. No one in Section V threw the weight further than her 45-3 1/2.

Jalen McCoy

East Rochester senior made it to states last winter in the 300 dash. He can also help the Bombers in relays. Only University Prep graduate OJ Singletary (34.58) ran a faster 300 than McCoy (300). Those times were produced during the indoor state meet. It has been a good year in sports for him so far, as he played in a sectional soccer final.

Ay'rianna Moore

Churchville-Chili senior has sprinted on to seven AGR teams before her final two seasons. She raced at the national level in the 55 and 400 last winter. In Section V, she finished second on the 55 and 300 leaderboards. Alexander/Batavia Notre Dame's Jadyn Mullen and Victor's Melody Harloff, the two sprinters who finished ahead of Moore, graduated.

Peter Northrup

Penfield senior is on an AGR roll. He made the 2022-23 indoor and 2023 outdoor teams as a thrower. The indoor team recognition came after some technique development led him to put the shot 52-5 for the first time. There is room for a new king, since Warsaw graduate and AGR athlete of the year Matt Auble and others have graduated.

Jake Passalugo

Fairport senior is a member of the last announced AGR teams for cross country, indoor and outdoor. He won a sectional class title, placed sixth in the state 3,200 and ran the 1,600 at nationals during winter 2022-23. He may be the distance runner to beat, if his two Section V Class A Cross Country Championships should be considered.

Ari Reback

Fairport senior went into this indoor season as a back-to-back Section V Class A Cross Country champion. A member of three AGR teams and the 2022 AGR Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, she has been one of area's top distance runners for years. She ended up second on the final 3,000 leaderboard last winter, behind Rush-Henrietta junior Haylie Smith, and third on the 1,500 leaderboard. This spring will be her final chance to make it on to an AGR outdoor track and field team.

Haylie Smith

Rush-Henrietta junior is a member of six AGR teams, and may charge into the winter after another strong cross country season when she was a candidate for girls runner of the year. The two-time indoor team member finished 13th in the 2023 state indoor 3,000 race. She is the reigning Section V 3,000-meter champion.

Sheldon Siverling

Batavia junior joined the AGR level for the first time last winter and then made it again in the spring. He is a thrower who put the shot 50 or more feet for the first time indoors. A football player, he was a runaway winner of the shot put competition (54-7 3/4) in Batavia's season opener. There also was a first-place finish in the weight throw (55-3).

Ethan Welch

A senior at Marion, the pole vaulter made his first AGR team last winter. He jumped a Section V season and personal best 14 feet and high jumped 5-8 during sectionals. He missed a slot on the spring AGR team.
