Maryland assistant, former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin arrested for DUI in Florida during Terrapins' bye week
Kevin Sumlin, a former Texas A&M head coach and current co-offensive coordinator at Maryland, was arrested and charged with a DUI on Saturday in Florida, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Sumlin was arrested in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, just before 1 a.m. Saturday. Specifics about his arrest are not yet known, though there was no crash or damage and he reportedly refused a breathalyzer test at the scene.
Sumlin, 59, was later released on bond.
Sumlin is most known for his run at Texas A&M, where he coached from 2012-17. He landed in College Station as Texas A&M joined the SEC. Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy during Sumlin’s first season with the program, and the Aggies went 11-2 and won the Cotton Bowl.
He compiled a 51-26 record with the Aggies, but was fired after the 2017 campaign. He was hired by Arizona a year later, lasting just three seasons and won only nine games there. Sumlin went 35-17 during his four seasons at Houston before joining Texas A&M, including a 12-1 run in 2011.
Sumlin returned to college football this past offseason after a stint working as the head coach and general manager of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers. He was hired as the Terrapins’ associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach.
Maryland will take on Northwestern on Saturday. The Terrapins, who have lost two straight, hold a 5-2 record and are vying for their third straight winning season, something the program hasn’t seen since 2003.
