Martha Walks Us Through Her Quarantine Routine—Which Starts at 4 A.M.

Martha Stewart is living her best life. The lifestyle expert just gave us all a glimpse into her time in quarantine, which began in March when COVID-19 hit the United States. Like many of us, her days involve a number of Zoom calls, lots of time spent outdoors, and a handful of socially distanced dinners with close friends and family. "I'm lucky. I know how lucky I am. I, daily, think about everybody who doesn't have all these amenities," Martha told The New York Times in an exclusive interview.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Martha has been quarantining on her 153-acre farm in Bedford, New York, along with her gardener, Ryan McCallister, her housekeeper, and her driver. However, she has continued to maintain certain aspects of her pre-pandemic routine—waking up at 4 a.m., for example. She starts her day by reading three newspapers and completes The New York Times crossword puzzle, as well as the "mini crossword puzzle and sometimes that stupid Vertex." Afterward, she goes to the gym and recreates a series of aerobic and resistance routines that were developed by her trainer; post-workout, she enjoys sipping on a cappuccino and her favorite green juice.

And then Martha gets to work. Her daily schedule consists of brainstorming and filming content for her new HGTV show, Martha Knows Best, promoting her QVC clothing line, sitting for Zoom calls (she limits these to three per day—"I get antsy," she explains), working in her gardens, and even writing the foreword for a friend's soon-to-be-released book. But like everyone, our founder needs some time off, too, to rest and rejuvenate. Throughout the summer, she has visited her homes in East Hampton, New York, and Seal Harbor, Maine. At the former, she wowed the Internet with her famous pool selfie, which went viral on social media and even captured the attention of comedian Chelsea Handler, who recreated the photo.

Beyond some much deserved time off, what is helping Martha unwind during these unprecedented times is her new line of CBD products, which she created in partnership with Canopy Growth. "You don't think that you're eating anything but pâte de fruit," she said of her French-inspired calming confections. And at the end of a long day, Martha turns to another product to relax. "The thing that really helps me are the oil drops that I have at night before bed," she said. "I just put a couple droppers of the blood orange or Meyer lemon under my tongue."

From the ever-popular Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party to her collection of cookware and homeware with Macy's, it's no secret that Martha likes staying ahead of the curve—"I'm very interested in what is new and what is happening," she told the outlet. "Like, I have an electric car. I have a Tesla. I adopted the computer before most of my friends—in 1982, I bought my first IBM. I'm an early adopter of a lot of things. That keeps you very on your toes, it keeps you extremely avant-garde, it keeps you current. I want to be current." Needless to say, we can always learn something new from Martha.
