USWNT, Orlando Pride stars Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris announce adoption of newborn girl
Orlando Pride captains Ali Kreiger and Ashlyn Harris announced the arrival of a newborn girl on Sunday.
The couple who married in 2019 each announced the adoption of Sloane Philips on Instagram. She was born on Feb. 12.
Harris announced the news with a vow to Sloane's birth mother to keep her involved in her life.
"We promise to be open minded and respect your wishes to have future communication and that she will always know how much you love her!" Harris wrote.
Krieger made the same promise in a separate birth announcement.
Surprise arrival for fans of soccer stars
The news of Sloane's arrival Sunday marked the first time the couple publicly announced they would be mothers. They had previously discussed the idea of surrogacy and adoption with People.
"We've talked about surrogates, we've talked about adoption, and it's just really tough because what — are we going to take the child everywhere?" Harris told People last July. "I mean, we've been home for seven days in the last three months."
It appears that they worked out a plan for the logistical challenges of both being parents and professional athletes with hectic travel schedules.
In addition to being teammates with the Pride in the National Women's Soccer League, Harris and Krieger are mainstays on the US Women's National Team and were both members of World Cup champion teams in 2015 and 2019. Harris, a goalkeeper, joined the Pride in 2017. Krieger, a defender, joined the team in 2017.
They were Pride co-captains in 2020 and are preparing for NWSL play scheduled to start on April 9. It's not clear if either or both players plan to contend for the USWNT slated to compete in the Tokyo Olympics this summer.
