Marquette women advance to Big East tournament semifinals to face Connecticut

The Marquette women's basketball team is back in the Big East semifinals.

And the Golden Eagles likely punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament as well.

MU held on to beat Villanova, 50-48, in the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The Golden Eagles (23-7) will face top-seeded Connecticut (27-5) in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. MU has been in the semifinals of the league tournament in all five seasons under head coach Megan Duffy.

A loss to the Wildcats would have put MU in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament, but MU will now likely hear its named called on Selection Sunday no matter what happens against the Huskies.

MU won despite committing 17 turnovers. Kenzie Hare's three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining broke a 45-45 tie and gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.

Liza Karlen led MU with 13 points and eight rebounds. Skylar Forbes added 12 and Hare 10 for the Golden Eagles.
