'The maestro': Louisville boys basketball all smiles with Beau Siegfried at point guard

NORTH CANTON — The smile from the bench made Beau Siegfried smile.

Moments later, Louisville's junior point guard hit another 3-pointer, adding to an impressive season tally. When your father smiles at you, sometimes no words are necessary.

Beau Siegfried has made Louisville head coach Tom Siegfried and the Leopards smile a lot this season. He hit four more 3s and scored 16 points to help Louisville power past Hoover 69-47 on Tuesday.

When Beau smiled back at his father, Tom Siegfried was assured the two were on the same page ... as they have been for years.

"It's actually a play that should be a handoff," Tom Siegfried said. "When I look at him and smile and we run that play, he keeps it and kind of does his own thing.

"That's literally going back to when he was 8 of 9 years old. There has been some hilarious things that have happened through the years."

Tom Siegfried also has a look when Beau is playing defense. He always taught him to move his feet and not reach in. Every now and then, he'll let him gamble and go for a steal.

The 3 Beau Siegfried hit came during a 4-for-4 stretch from behind the arc over the first three quarters.

"We both know that I'm probably going to hit a 3 there or something like that," Beau Siegfried said. "We both kind of smile at each other because we know it might happen. We have a good connection."

Siegfried ranks among the Stark County-area leaders in 3-pointers made and 3-point percentage this season. He hit eight 3s and scored a career-high 26 points in a recent win over Marlington. The eight 3s were one shy of a Leopards single-game record.

"My shot has really progressed over my high school career, especially this year," Siegfried said. "It all depends on the offseason shooting on the shooting gun and getting workouts in. I feel confident when I shoot the ball."

What Tom Siegfried also likes about his son's play is the way he distributes the basketball. He ranks among the area leaders with an average of 6.3 assists a game He set a Louisville record with 14 assists against Lake on Jan. 23.

"Beau is our engine," Tom Siegfried said. "He's kind of the maestro. He knows where the ball is supposed to go. He knows what we should be doing.

"Here's the thing about Beau. He took three shots the first half. He had eight points, two 3s and a 2 pull up. Maybe a lot of guys would have taken more shots, but he understood what was being given to us. He did that. When the shots were there, he took them when we needed them."

The Leopards (18-2) led 13-9 after one quarter and used a 14-0 run in the second to pull ahead 36-20 at halftime.

Hayden Nigro scored 21 points to lead Louisville. Ashton Marshall scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Brayden Gross had two first-half dunks, including one off an alley-oop pass from Nigro.

Freshman Hunter Hershberger scored 12 points off the bench to lead Hoover (12-7).

The Leopards have won four straight since suffering their second loss of the season at St. Edward. The streak includes wins over three fellow Stark County Division I teams having successful seasons: McKinley, Massillon and Hoover.

"We have rebounded very well from the St. Ed's game," Beau Siegfried said. "After that, I think we really picked it up defensively, especially this game."
