Madison's Dragas earns first-team All-Ohio honors again

Mar. 28—For a second straight season, J.P. Dragas captured Division II All-Ohio honors in boys basketball, it was announced Thursday by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

The senior averaged 29 points, six assists, 3.3 steals and 4.7 rebounds per contest for the Blue Streaks, who won a share of the Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division this past season.

"It's an honor to be placed in that group and also be recognized by others for what I've been able to do on and off the court," said Dragas, who was also selected the D-II Northeast Lakes District Player of the Year this season. "Ever since last year, when I got my first All-Ohio bid, it became a goal to stay on that list."

Dragas, who is going to attend school and play basketball at West Liberty University in West Virginia starting next season, also eclipsed 2,000 points in his career.

"To be named first-team All-Ohio for the second straight year is quite an accomplishment," Madison coach Nick Gustin said. "This award is another example of how talent and hard work pays off.

"It also shows J.P. was not content with the success of his junior season, allowing him to do even better his senior season."

Ashtabula County players who also earned All-Ohio in D-II included: Jefferson's Joe DeGeorge, third team; Edgewood's Jacob Ernst and Conneaut's Chance Loomis, special team and Jefferson's Anthony Covetta, honorable mention.

DeGeorge averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds, 2.3 assists and two steals for the Falcons. The senior reached double-digit scoring in all 22 regular-season games, and scored a school-record 45 points in a game this season.

DeGeorge, who was selected as the county player of the year, led Jefferson to the D-II district tournament.

"I just want to congratulate Joe and Anthony on their accomplishmentS, and say it's been an honor to coach both of them," Falcons coach Rob Pisano said.

Covetta averaged 25 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He recorded 13 double-doubles on the season.

"I would just like to say a huge thank you to my family, teammates and coaches, but the work has to continue," the junior said.

Ernst, a senior, averaged 23 points, eight rebounds, 2.7 steals and four assists for the Warriors, who reached the district tournament.

"It's amazing to be recognized with the best players in Ohio, and I would like to give all the glory to my Lord and savior Jesus Christ," said Ernst, who is planning on attending school and playing basketball at Malone next season.

Loomis, a senior, averaged 23 points, six rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

"I'm very honored, and I didn't expect to make the list, but I'm glad my hard work throughout the season can be recognized," he said.

Loomis, who is planning on attending school and playing at Thiel College starting next season, also finished in fourth place on the Conneaut boys basketball all-time scoring list with 1,068 in his career.

Conneaut reached the district tournament this past season.

"Well-deserved recognition of Chance's on-court accomplishments this season," Spartans coach Rich Marshall said. "Chance led our team in scoring, rebounds per game and assists per game."

The Division III and IV teams were announced Wednesday, and girls basketball All-Ohio teams were released Monday and Tuesday.
