Last year, one point separated Maclay from Chaminade-Madonna for second place at the FHSAA state meet.

This year, Maclay flipped the script.

Coming down to the final event Wednesday, Maclay girls track and field edged Chaminade-Madonna by one point to win the Class 1A girls track and field state championship with 50 points.

It's the Marauders' sixth girls' state title, first since 2013, and first under head coach Angie Milford.

Similar to last season, sophomore Elizabeth Dowdy made up a chunk of the points, gaining 10 as she repeated as state pole vault champion. She cleared a height of 3.45 meters (11.4 feet), .15 meters ahead of second place. In just her second high school season, she has now won back-to-back state titles.

On the track, freshman Caroline Couch was steady, placing fifth in the 1600 run with a time of 5:01.89. In the 3200 runs, she picked up the leading points off a state runner-up finish with a time of 10:48.16. Senior and Cornell signee Rachel Bethke also had a state runner-up finish in the 400 dash with a time of 55.56.

In the 800 runs, Mary Clayton Soto picked up five points off a fourth-place finish with a time of 2:20.39. In the final event of the night, Maclay's 1600 relay team won the Marauders the state title, gaining six points off a third-place finish with a time of 3:59.97. Coming into the top heat, the relay team had the slowest seed time.

The state championship puts a cherry on top of a dominant season.

The Marauders won their district by 242 points and their region by 59.5 points.

The boys' team also had a decent showing, placing 18th. James David Milford brought in a point in an eighth-place finish in javelin with a distance of 45.20 meters. He'd add another point to Maclay's overall tally with an eighth-place finish in pole vault, clearing 3.60 meters.

Douglas Harrell gained two points off a seventh-place finish in the 100 dash with a time of 11.16. Clayton Knox had the largest point total in the 3200 run, earning five points off a fourth-place finish with a time of 9:34.22.
