Lubbock ISD Athletics Hall of Honor announces 10 inductees for Class of 2023

Eight individuals and two state-champion teams will be inducted into the Lubbock ISD Athletics Hall of Honor, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.

The Class of 2023 will be honored at a ceremony July 29 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

Don Burrell, Lubbock High football

Burrell was the first Black football player at Lubbock High, where he played from 1963-66. He went on to become an all-America receiver at Angelo State and was drafted in the 12th round of the NFL Draft. He later won MVP of the Canadian Football League while playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Penny DiPomazio, LISD diving coach

DiPomazio was the district's diving coach from 1993-2023, leading two state-champion teams. She coached 42 all-American divers during her career, in which she received state coach of the year twice. DiPomazio is a member of the Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame in Indiana for her achievements as an athlete.

Todd Duncan, Coronado boys basketball

Duncan played for Coronado from 1983-85 before a standout collegiate career. He set the single-season record at Midland College after shooting 53.4% from 3-point range. He also holds the career 3-point shooting record at Texas Tech at 45.9%. Duncan later coached at Trinity Christian and is the current coach of Lubbock Christian University.

Butch Henderson, Coronado football coach

Henderson led the Coronado football program from 1988-2011 after beginning his career at Borger. He won at least a share of five district championships and reached the regional final twice, compiling a 141-105 record. He went on to coach at Wayland Baptist after the program was revived in 2012 following a 70-year hiatus.

Diana Kersey, Monterey girls basketball

Kersey played for Monterey from 1987-90 and still ranks in the top 10 for career points and rebounds. Her senior season, the Lady Plainsmen finished 32-2, the best mark in program history. That campaign included a school-record 28-game winning streak. She went on to play for Texas Tech.

Janice Farris Legan, Monterey girls basketball

A teammate of Kersey, Legan played from 1988-90. She is in the top 20 for career points and rebounds, and her 651 points is a top-10 mark for a single season. Legan also played for the Lady Raiders.

Matt Miller, Monterey baseball

Miller played for Monterey from 1991-93, earning all-state recognition after going 12-2 with a 1.05 ERA his senior year. He was twice taken in the MLB draft, in the fifth round out of high school and the second round following his career at Texas Tech. Miller played eight seasons in the Detroit Tigers' system, the final two in the majors.

Quincy White, Dunbar boys basketball

White, a player from 1963-65, was a starter on Dunbar's 1965 Prairie View Interscholastic League state championship team. He lettered three years, earning all-state honors his senior season. He went on to play at Prairie View A&M and Wenatchee Valley College in Washington.

Dunbar 1968 track team

The 1968 track and field team at Dunbar was the first UIL state champion to transition from PVIL. Led by Wayne Davis, Charles Sims, Sidney Hall and Roy Davis, the Panthers won the 400-meter relay in a then-Class 3A record 41.24 seconds.

Estacado 1986 track team

The Estacado track team won every meet in which it competed in 1986. That included a 175-point performance in the district meet. The Matadors' group of Farias Walker, Todd Doss, Prennis Dial and Richard Ross won the 1,600 relay to clinch the state championship by two points.
