Greg Young was named the head coach at Texas-Arlington on Monday after 12 seasons as an assistant coach for the Mavericks. Young replaces Chris Ogden, who resigned last week to join Chris Beard’s new staff at Texas, the alma mater for both of them. Before his three seasons as UTA’s head coach, Ogden was an assistant coach for Beard at Texas Tech for two years.
The athletic director at Texas Tech said Thursday that men's basketball coach Chris Beard has informed the school he is taking the job at Texas. Beard made the decision Thursday, according to Kirby Hocutt, the AD at Texas Tech. Texas has not announced the hire.
A Texas Tech official confirmed the news to the Avalanche-Journal. This time, though, he won't be a student assistant under Tom Penders — he'll get to sit at the front of the bench inside a brand-new arena scheduled to open in the spring of 2022. Beard would become the 25th coach in Longhorns' history, replacing Shaka Smart who took the same position with Marquette on March 26.
