A look at how other SEC teams fared on Friday in NCAA Tourney openers

Arkansas was able to dispatch Santa Clara 13-6 on Friday afternoon, but one of its Southeastern Conference brethren was not as fortunate.

With eight SEC teams hosting and 10 in regionals, it was assumed that most teams would be able to handle their opening game.

If you’re scoring at home, SEC 9, everyone else 1.

Here’s how the league fared in Friday’s opening round matchups:

Alabama 4, Nicholls 3

The Crimson Tide got a scare from Nicholls, but were able to escape and will play Troy this evening.

The Trojans defeated Boston College 11-10.

Penn 6, Auburn 3, 11 innings

Auburn, who was in Omaha a year ago, will now have its hands full getting out of its own regional after an extra inning loss to Penn.

It was the Quakers’ first NCAA Tourney win since 1990.

Florida 3, Florida A&M 0

The Gators, who shared the league title with Arkansas, got a shutout victory over an in-state foe.

Now they turn their attention to Texas Tech, who scraped by UConn 3-2.

Kentucky 4, Ball State 0

Kentucky got some solid pitching in its regional opener against Ball State, posting a shutout win.

Now the Wildcats will encounter Indiana, who defeated West Virginia 12-6.

LSU 7, Tulane 2

It would’ve been concerning if LSU had not beaten a 19-win Tulane team at Alex Box Stadium on Friday.

Nevertheless, the Tigers will now focus on Oregon State, who clubbed Sam Houston State 18-2.

South Carolina 19, Central Connecticut 1

Ho-hum. The Gamecocks never wavered against Central Connecticut.

Now they take on a hungry NC State team who defeated Campbell, 5-1.

Tennessee 8, Charlotte 1

Last year was supposed to be a coronation for the Volunteers. Maybe they’re more suited for flying under the radar.

Clemson awaits this evening and the hosts are red-hot. They cruised past Lipscomb, 12-5.

Texas A&M 12, Cal State Fullerton 7

A&M went to the Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto and clobbered its way past Cal State Fullerton.

The Aggies get no time to celebrate, though. Stanford is ready.

Vanderbilt 12, Eastern Illinois 2

Eastern Illinois stood no chance against the Vandy Boys in Nashville.

Maybe Oregon will have better luck today after the Ducks beat Xavier 5-4 Friday afternoon.
