With long, steely stare, Jalen Ramsey's intensity shines through in Dolphins' introduction | Schad

MIAMI GARDENS — Jalen Ramsey looked Gucci and he wore Gucci.

"Gucci wanted to make sure that they got me fitted," Ramsey said, stepping away from the Dolphins' podium to show off his fancy threads, including a shiny off-white jacket.

Ramsey is a star.

"I think I am a Hall of Famer, but I'm trying to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer," Ramsey said.

Ramsey smiled. He's happy to be here. He wanted to be here.

He loves the weather. The tax advantages. The talent on this roster.

For the most part, Ramsey, now 28 years old, and with seven NFL seasons under his belt, spoke about wanting to fit in. He came across as wiser and more seasoned than in his say, Jaguars days.

Ramsey spoke about being a part of a puzzle.

Ramsey spoke about wanting to win.

Ramsey spoke about supporting his teammates.

But there was a moment where the fire, passion, chip-on-the-shoulder intensity that drives Ramsey shined through.

Ramsey can be passionate. Can be emotional. Can be, well, a bit intimidating.

And we're not just talking about on the field, for a rookie receiver.

Jalen Ramsey does not agree he's past his prime

Ramsey was asked what he would say to those who suggest he's past his prime.

"Did you see me play this past year?" Ramsey said. "Cut on the film now. You've got to really watch it. You don't become this successful without actually doing good things on that field. And having the respect from your peers and the media."

Ramsey took a long pause. But he was locked in on the questioner.

"You know, we gonna see," Ramsey continued. "We gonna see what they got to say, once we out on the field. That's what matters. We gonna see what they've got to say."

Ramsey circled back to the concept later. It clearly had touched a nerve.

"We can go over all of what people say," Ramsey said. "That my man over there was talking about."

Ramsey delivered a long, steely stare to the left side of the Dolphins' press room.

"We'll keep the receipts and we'll go back over all of that," Ramsey said. "When it's all said and done, after the fact."

Ramsey is a terrific athlete, with outstanding agility, ball skills and instincts.

But what has driven him to greatness is a burning passion that can present itself as frustration, annoyance or temper. For the most part on Thursday, Ramsey smiled and suppressed the emotions.

But Ramsey is who he is. And on Thursday, Ramsey expressed appreciation for how "weird" Mike McDaniel seems and how he appreciates that the coach does not shy away from who he is.

Ramsey is very confident. In the same way, Tyreek Hill is his moxie twin on offense.

As for fellow Pro Bowl corner Xavien Howard, who's a bit quieter on and off the field?

"You can call me evil twin, I guess," Ramsey quipped.

Ramsey has respect for the coaching record of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. He's had success in the scheme.

And Fangio wanted Ramsey, fully aware of his unique talents.

Fangio is old-school, and Ramsey can be mercurial, but that mutual respect should carry their working relationship.

Ramsey is always going to trash talk, on and off the field.

"I ain't got no friends when I'm on the field," Ramsey said.

As long as Ramsey plays as well as he always has on the field, McDaniel and Fangio will likely accept most all the energies that come with it, on and off the field.

After the introductory conference was over, Ramsey went around the Dolphins' press room and shook the hand of every reporter and camera person.

Jalen Ramsey on Hall of Fame track

Ramsey has 19 interceptions, six Pro Bowls and three All-Pro appearances.

Ramsey acknowledged he's no longer the young guy in the locker room.

"But I know what I can bring as a player and as a DB what I bring into the locker room," Ramsey said. "Just my energy, my swag, my passion, my love, you know what I'm saying. There's some, you know, some championship qualities."

It will be fascinating to see how Ramsey fits into a locker room that's suddenly jam-packed with stars.

You need stars to win big in the NFL and Miami is going for it all.

Ramsey seems to have packed his burning desire to prove he is the best.

"I line up," Ramsey said. "Whoever come up, they're gonna get it."
