Long-range shooters, major mat wins: Here are some of the top performances from last week

When the bell rings – even at Christmas time – some of the best performances answer the call.

A number of Fulton County athletes put up their holiday bests during Dec. 11-17, providing much good cheers.

And they provided some good stories along the way.

Take Greencastle-Antrim’s Carter McCauley, who made his mark by stepping to the forefront when the Blue Devils played two games without leading scorer Conner Wright. He responded with 39 points in a pair of G-A wins.

And then the likes of Chambersburg’s JJ Kelly and Greencastle’s Haley Noblit, who both continue to take the lead for their teams.

Then there were grinders, like Chambersburg wrestler Aiden Hight, who battled to a personal second-place finish at a 30-team tournament over the weekend.

The medalists

GOLD

Carter McCauley, Greencastle-Antrim – Stepped into the leading scorer’s role twice this week, starting with 21 points on Tuesday in the Blue Devils’ 61-51 win over Northern York. He scored nine of his points in the second quarter as G-A took a 32-23 halftime lead. He backed it up with 18 points in Friday’s 72-47 win over James Buchanan.

SILVER

JJ Kelly, Chambersburg – He led the Trojans with 17 the Trojans with 17 points, scoring in tough, spectacular and fundamental ways – on Friday in a 60-56 overtime victory over Harrisburg. He had only four baskets – all coming in the second half – with three of them coming on dunks. The rest of the points came on 9 of 13 foul shots, including three critical shots near the end of OT to ice the win. Also, led a trio of scorers in double figures with 17 points in the win over Central Dauphin, capped by a late steal and breakaway dunk.

BRONZE

Drew Crouse, James Buchanan – Led the Rockets with 19 points, including four 3-pointers, in Tuesday’s 82-51 loss to Gettysburg to start a 40-point week. JB was outscored 28-6 in the second quarter. He also led the Rockets with 21 points on Friday in the 72-47 loss to Greencastle Antrim.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Alex Torbica, Waynesboro – Scored 24 points – nearly half of the Indians’ output – and 14 rebounds in a 49-33 win on Tuesday against West Perry. Torbica popped in 11 of his 20 shots, while battling for 10 offensive rebounds.

Logan Alvey, Greencastle-Antrim – Created a huge outside shooting presence by using five 3-point baskets to post 18 points in the win over Northern York. He matched his long-distance connections with another four 3s to score 16 points against JB.

Colton Cornwell, Chambersburg – Finished with 16 points, including three in a critical 7-0 Trojans’ run in the third quarter – on Tuesday in a 56-51 victory over previously undefeated Central Dauphin. He was one of five Trojans in double figures with 11 points on Friday against Harrisburg, including three of Chambersburg’s four 3-pointers.

Landon Buhrman, Chambersburg – Scored 12 points, including a contested layup during the Trojans’ pivotal 7-0 third-quarter run, in Tuesday’s victory over Central Dauphin. He added 10 against Harrisburg.

Ari Snyder, Chambersburg – The point guard scored 10 points – including an opening 3 and a foul shot during overtime – in the Trojans’ hard-fought win at Harrisburg. His key contribution, though, was working the ball against the Cougars’ press.

Jermere Jones, Chambersburg – Scored all 11 of his points in the first quarter in the win over Harrisburg.

Eli Sterling, Greencastle-Antrim – Had a 29-point week, capping it with 16 points against JB on Friday. He also contributed 13 points in the Blue Devils’ win over Northern York.

Jackson Stought, Shippensburg – Led the Greyhounds with 24 points on Friday in an 84-59 loss at Gettysburg.

Drew Chamberlain, Shippensburg – Notched 10 points in the loss to Gettysburg.

Girls' basketball

GOLD

Haley Noblit, Greencastle-Antrim – Led the Blue Devils with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals on Tuesday in a 47-44 loss at Northern York. G-A suffer its first loss of the season, missing the chance for overtime as Noblit’s game-ending shot bounced off the front of the rim. Greencastle returned to its winning ways on Friday in a 57-22 win over James Buchanan as Noblit led with 18 points, eight assists and four steals.

SILVER

Emily Forrester, Chambersburg – The freshman dominated with 16 points and 15 rebounds on Friday as the Trojans overwhelmed Harrisburg 52-27.

BRONZE

Nikki Davis, Waynesboro – The junior scored 16 points with seven rebounds, eight assists, four steals and three blocks on Tuesday in a 38-34 win over West Perry.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Ainsley Green, James Buchanan – Led the Rockets with 16 points as JB took a 12-4 in the first quarter and never looked back on Tuesday in a 54-32 win over Gettysburg.

Riley Evans, Chambersburg – Scored six of the Trojans’ eight first-quarter points enroute a team-high 13 on Tuesday in a 46-28 loss to Central Dauphin. She had three of Chambersburg’s eight baskets in the game and made all five of her free throws.

Ella Parker, Chambersburg – Booked 11 points as one of eight Trojan players to score on Friday in the win over Harrisburg.

Callie Izer, Greencastle-Antrim – Came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points, along with nine rebounds, in the win over JB.

Eva Martin, Greencastle-Antrim – Scored 15 points in the loss to Northern York.

Kaitlynn Yeager, James Buchanan – Posted a 13-point night in the win over Gettysburg.

Sophia Stoner, James Buchanan – Gave the Rockets three players in double figures with 10 points against Gettysburg.

Wrestling

GOLD

Aiden Hight, Chambersburg – Finished second at 215 at the Central Mountain’s 30-team King of the Mountain Tournament with a 3-1 record, including a tech fall and a major decision. The Trojans finished 13 in the field. He also outmaneuvered Waynesboro’s Anthony Ausherman at 215 to score a pin in 1:39 in the Trojans’ 50-18 win on Wednesday.

SILVER

Titus Mong, Waynesboro – Collected a pair of victories in the Indians’ split of two matches. He shut down Chambersburg’s Noah Valentine for a 6-0 victory at 172 on Wednesday in a 50-18 loss to Chambersburg. He added a first-period pin of Greencastle-Antrim’s Ayden Amsley in 1:21 on Thursday in Waynesboro’s 52-24 win over the Blue Devils.

BRONZE

Ben Hoover, Chambersburg – Finished sixth at Central Mountain’s two-day King of the Mountain Tournament at 107 on Saturday with a 5-2 record, including a tech fall.

HONORABLE MENTION

Blaine Martin, Greencastle-Antrim – Went 5-0, including three pins, on Saturday at 114 at the James Buchanan Duals. The Blue Devils went 3-2 as a team.

Jacob Stoner, Chambersburg – Used a dramatic third period to erase an 8-2 deficit with a pin of Caden Shockey at 189 on Wednesday to highlight the Trojans’ 50-18 win over Waynesboro.

Clayton Costella, Waynesboro – Took down Chambersburg’s Zethan Sleighter at 160, just before the end of the first period for a pin in 1:52. He doubled his success with a lightning-quick 25-second pin of Garrett Stevens against Greencastle.

Steven Howard, Waynesboro – Enjoyed a two-victory week, first by edging Chambersburg’s Gabe Nolan at 127 by a 5-2 count on Wednesday, before notching pin in 3:16 over Greencastle’s.

Ashton Romberger, Chambersburg – Scored a pin in 3:12 against Waynesboro’s Colin Young at 133.

Jayden Rooney, Waynesboro – Made a move early to catch Chambersburg’s Josiah Martinez for a pin in 51 seconds.

Tyler Frye, Chambersburg – Overpowered Waynesboro’s Calving Myers at 145 to score a 20-5 technical fall.

Logan Mickey, Chambersburg – Blanked Waynesboro’s Logan Lowans for a 6-0 win at 152.

Frank Barrientos, Chambersburg – Finished eighth at 285 at the King of the Mountain tournament with a 3-3 record, including three pins. He also battled with Waynesboro’s Cort Myers in the third period at 285 before scoring a pin at the 4:38 mark.

Zach Sherman, Chambersburg – Took sixth place at the King of the Mountain Tournament, going 3-3, with two pins, at 121. Also pinned Waynesboro’s Jawan Ballard in 1:11 at 121 on Wednesday in the win over Waynesboro.

Cayden Shockey, Waynesboro – Scored a pin in 40 seconds over Gavin Boiteau at 189 in Thursday’s victory over Greencastle.

Nathan Painter, Greencastle-Antrim – Scored a pin in 2:39 over Waynesboro’s Conner Stine at 215. He followed it up with a 3-2 record Saturday at the James Buchanan Duals, where he scored three pins at 189.

Chance Zimmerman, Greencastle-Antrim – Ran the table with a 5-0 mark at the James Buchanan Duals, including a pin.

Kahl Cordell, Greencastle-Antrim – Finished 3-1 with two pins at 121 at the James Buchanan Duals.

Aidan Crouse, Greencastle-Antrim – Won four out of five matches, including two pins, at 127 at the James Buchanan Duals.

Griffin Fair, Greencastle-Antrim – Recorded a 4-1 record with two pins at 133 in the James Buchanan Duals.

Landon Hinkle, Greencastle-Antrim – Went 4-1 with two pins at 152 in the James Buchanan Duals.

Ayden Amsley, Greencastle-Antrim – Won all three of his matches by pins to go 3-1 at 172 at the James Buchanan Duals.

Boys' swimming

GOLD

Derek Estep, Chambersburg – The defending state champion posted two event wins – 200 IM (2:13.41) and 100 freestyle (55.20) to pace the Trojans to a 104-66 win on Tuesday against State College. He also swam the opening leg of two relay wins with Amir Tasker, Jed Ritchie and Ethan White for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39,48) and joined Alex Kaczmark, Jed Ritchie and Cullen McGraw in the 400 freestyle relay victory.

SILVER

Amir Tasker, Chambersburg – Won the 50 freestyle in 24.41 and was part of a pair of relay victories in the win over State College. He swam the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay and anchored the team consisting of Cullen McGraw, Ethan White and Alex Kaczmark in the 200 medley relay (1:52.38).

HONORABLE MENTION

Alex Kaczmark, Chambersburg – Won the 100 butterfly (:59.01) and swam the second leg of the Trojans’ winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Cullen McGraw, Chambersburg – Won the 100 backstroke (1:03.0) and swam anchor in the 400 freestyle relay win.

Girls' swimming

Margot Ritchie, Chambersburg – Posted a victory in the 100 backstroke (1:09.46) on Tuesday during the Trojans 121-48 loss to State College.
