The Lock's Week 2 high school football picks include a century-old rivalry

Welcome to the Century Club.

Yep, it’s been 100 years since Ventura and Oxnard highs launched their rivalry and, really, high school football in Ventura County.

The year was 1923, and Calvin Coolidge was the president and Jim Thorpe was a member of the Oorang Indians, an all-Native American football team.

Oxnard and Ventura would play twice that year with the Yellowjackets taking both games, 13-7 and 19-0.

It marked the beginning of high school football in the county. Safe to say, the sport caught on.

Santa Paula and Fillmore would launch their treasured rivalry the following year in 1924.

Which brings us to the here and now.

Channel League play begins Friday, and Ventura will play host to Oxnard.
