Local Wrestling Round Up: Smith wins title in wrestling tourney for North Bend

Dec. 6—North Bend's Wyatt Smith pinned all five of his foes to capture first place in the Deven Dawson Memorial wrestling tournament at Harrisburg.

Wrestling at 150 pounds, Smith had two first-round pins and two second-round pins, including getting a fall over Harrisburg's Justin Hoyt in the championship bout in 3 minutes and 36 seconds. His semifinal pin over Santiam's Wyatt Dayton came in the third round.

Several other North Bend wrestlers won matches and a few would have had chances to place but either they or their opponents came up against the five-match limit for the day and they weren't able to contest matches.

One of those was Connor Perez, who lost his first match at 132 pounds and then had a bye and won two straight consolation matches before coming against a foe who had already wrestled five times.

Nicholas Campbell at 138 pounds had three straight consolation pins before also having his day end by the same fate.

Gavin Walter had the same fate at 285 pounds, while Dylan Swanson won his first match at 215 pounds, lost in the second round and won two consolation matches by pin before he wasn't able to continue.

North Bend scored 84.5 points and finished seventh out of 31 teams in the tournament, which was won by host Harrisburg.
