Local Sports: Summerfield boys, SMCC girls, Monroe wrestlers win

PETERSBURG – Summerfield’s boys basketball team jumped on Morenci early and never looked back in locking up a 66-27 Tri-County Conference victory.

“We started off hot,” Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler said. “I have been challenging them to play four quarters and we did that tonight.”

Jha Jha Hornbeak had 17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals while Brody St. John added 15 points, 6 boards and 5 steals for the 7-2 Bulldogs. St. John scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half.

Summerfield is off until a Jan. 4 game against Whiteford.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SMCC logs tourney win

St. Mary Catholic Central beat Livonia Churchill 43-24 Thursday the opening game of its own holiday tournament with a balanced offense and lock-down defense.

Brooke Mossburg was the only Kestrel to reach double digits with 11 points, but three others made at least two buckets and Adela Illes finished with 9 points.

SMCC (5-0) allowed just nine baskets in the game by Churchill.

Churchill takes on Summefield at 7 p.m. Thursday while SMCC and Summerfield clash at 7 p.m. Friday.

Monroe wins without coach

MILAN –Jordan Mayes could not make it to the Milan Tournament Wednesday.

The Monroe wrestling coach had to work.

“I was not too much of a fan of that,” he said. “But these weekday tournaments sometimes get real difficult.”

Mayes felt a lot better when he found out that his team won the tournament with a 5-0 record.

The 11-3 Trojans were dominant, beating Ypsilanti Lincoln 81-0, Trenton 60-24, Tecumseh B 76-6, Milan 64-15 and Ida 51-27.

Assistant coach Cosell Beavers and Don Mayes, Monroe’s former coach and Jordan Mayes’ father, coached the team.

Tracie Mayes, Jordan’s mother and Monroe’s statistician, kept her son updated.

“She was calling after each dual, letting me know what was going on,” Jordan Mayes said.

Cole Smith, who was returning from an injury, went 5-0 with four pins at 126 pounds. Brock Graves pinned in all five of his matches at 175.

Also going 5-0 were Mason Goltowski (113) and Tyrone Evans (132).

Brendan Bacon (150) and went 4-0 and Angel Rincon (165) was 3-0.

Ryder Shotwell (106), Collin Assenmarcher (120), Myles Myers (157) and Logan Caudill (190) had 4-1 days for the Trojans.

Ida beat Milan 42-36, Lincoln 60-12, and Tecumseh B 39-18. The Blue Streaks lost to Monroe and Trenton (54-30).Chris Galloway, Tristen Sedlar and Trevor Konieczny won all five of their matches and Kaden Gerth, Justin Crozier and Alex Noland logged four wins.

BOWLING

Three-way tie for first

MONROE – The boys bowling teams from Airport and New Boston Huron are tied for first place in the Huron League and both were perfect in the latest league meet at Monroe Sport Center.

Airport beat St. Mary Catholic Central 30-0 and New Boston Huron matched that score against Dundee.

George Rote (225), Wes Barton (213) and Brayden Siders (209) led Airport.

Nic Suemnick (218-197) and Zach McCormick (193) were the top shooters for Huron.

Milan, also is part of the first-place tie, dispatched Riverview 23-7 as Clarke Friese shot 244.

Flat Rock rounded out the boys action by knocking off Jefferson 26-4 behind strong bowling by Isack Arredondo and Brandon Brown.

Milan’s girls got a 243 game from Maggie Smith in a 29-1 rout of Riverview.

SMCC rallied after falling behind 10-0 to pull within 19-11 of Airport. Isabella Grippi-Amrose of SMCC and Airport’s Mariah Hamel each won a pair of match points.

In other girls matches, Veronica Richardson led Huron past Dundee and Flat Rock topped Jefferson behind solid scores from Camryn Clish and Diane Percha.
