Local Sports: Sieler, VanBrandt to go head-to-head in weekend series

Two of the top softball hitters in the Monroe County Region in recent years will go head-to-head this weekend.

Monroe graduate Ellie Sieler leads Michigan to Indiana to take on a Hoosier squad that includes Whiteford product Aly VanBrandt.

Both players lead their teams in hitting.

VanBrandt, a freshman second baseman, carries a .380 average with 19 runs and an on-base percentage of .432 for the 23-9 Hoosiers.

Sieler, a junior outfielder, leads Michigan in hitting at .363 and runs with 23.

She belted back-to-back home runs and went 7-for-9 from the lead-off spot last weekend as the Wolverines (21-11) swept a three-game series from Purdue to open the Big Ten season.

She went 2-for-4, stole a base and scored a run Wednesday in a 12-3 rout of Toledo.

The three-game series between Michigan and Indiana begins Friday.

Big inning hurts Mules

TEMPERANCE – A five-run third inning by Warren DeLaSalle doomed Bedford’s baseball team to an 8-3 loss Wednesday.

The Mules outhit their opponents 6-5, but committed five errors.

Jace Bloomer amd Andrew Kuebbeler drove in runs for Bedford and Brody Leonhard, Issac Garrow, Nolan Laskey, Braylon Czarnik, Ty Zapadka and Kuebbeler had hits.

Layne captures title

KALAMAZOO – Sullivan Layne of Monroe, a third grader at Manor Elementary, won a MYWAY state championship during the weekend.

Campbell scores five

MONROE – Travis Campbell scored five goals to lead Old Crows to an 8-5 win over Athletico on opening night of Winter Session III at LevelUp Training Sunday.

Rev. Mike Anagbogu scored twice for Athletico.
