Local Sports: Schrader shines as Ida boys win their second in a row

IDA – Ida’s boys basketball team is off to a 2-0 start, thanks in large part to AJ Schrader.

The senior guard tied his career-high with 24 points as the Blue Streaks turned aside Dearborn Edsel Ford 51-42 Thursday night.

Schrader drilled five 3-point baskets, giving him 8 in the first two games. He also grabbed 10 rebounds.

“I am extremely proud of the kids’ effort tonight,” Ida coach Jared Karner said. “We learned a lot about playing for 32 full minutes and holding the rope.”

Ida is off until Dec. 8 when it hosts Hudson.

“I purposely wanted to schedule an opponent like Edsel Ford early to give us a great test and see how we would respond, "Karner said. “They earned this one. We got contributions from everyone who came in and closed out the game despite very tough ball pressure and another rough game at the free-throw line.”

Ida was just 22-of-35 from the line after going 2-of-16 in a season-opening victory over Morenci.

Ida’s junior varsity (1-1) fell 43-29 despite 8 points by Luke Hennessey and 7 by Cole Snyder.
