Local Sports: Jefferson wrestlers beat Monroe under the spotlight

MONROE – Jefferson pulled out all of the stops to make its wrestling season debut special.

The Bears invited crosstown rival Monroe to celebrate Opening Day with them and held the meet under a spotlight.

“The atmosphere was awesome,” Monroe coach Jordan Mayes said.

What made it awesome for Jefferson were pins from Issac Masserant (126), Ryder Mulherin (138), Carter Simota (150), Martre Pearson (157), Gabe Hall (190), Anthony Cousino (285) and Joseph Peer (106) that led to a 51-15 victory.

Ty Rose (132), Gary Rice (144) and Tyler Vanderpool (113) also won for the Bears.

“The kids wrestled tough,” Jefferson coach Ryan Nadeau said. “It's always nice to win the opener. We have lots to improve on and will be getting back to work tomorrow."

Angel Rincon (165) had a pin for Monroe and Collin Assenmacher (120), Brock Graves (175) and Gavin Bileck (215) won.

“It was a really great dual meet," Mayes said. "The score doesn’t look like it, but I felt like we wrestled hard. They have a good team, loaded with seniors and deep. It was a good learning experience. The majority of our kids are sophomores.”

Perfect script for Mills

CARLETON – Jack Mills was going for his 100th career victory Wednesday night.

That’s always a big moment.

Fate turned this one into something even bigger.

By luck of the draw, Mills’ win was the one Airport needed to pull out a 37-33 victory over Wyandotte.

The Jets were nursing a 1-point lead when Mills stepped on the mat for the final match of the night. Mills, ranked No. 2 in Division 2 at 165 pounds, beat Michael Stathakis, ranked No. 4 in Division 1 at 190 pounds, 3-0 at 175 pounds.

Freshman Holden Otter (215) beat an opponent ranked No. 10 in Division 1 6-2. Sophomore Jayden Smith (106) won 15-13 with a takedown in overtime.

Isaac Kemp (190), Grant Buehler (113), Kyle Link (126) and Nick Boviar (132) won by fall and Blake Haliburda (150) earned a major decision.

“I am really proud of these kids,” Airport coach Jon Morris said. “This was a really tough Wyandotte team that featured six state-ranked kids in their lineup. Jack took care of business when the dual came down to him.”

Strong start for Huron

SALINE – New Boston Huron opened its season Wednesday with a 54-27 victory over Saline as Cami Krzciuk, Carson Gemmel, Cayden Banko, Landon Julio, Braydon Hall, Josh Hubbard, Nate Matsos, Drew Ladach and Brody Curley earned victories.

“I thought we went after it tonight,” Huron coach Logan Ritchie said. “We have to tweak some technical stuff but it was a great start to the year.’

Shorthanded Rams win

ONSTED – Flat Rock had four starters out with injuries and had to void four weight classes, but still managed to beat Onsted 50-12 and Adrian Madison 65-10 Wednesday.

Wyatt Mack went 2-0 and other big wins came from Noah McKinnon and Nick Sikorski.

Ida drops two

CHELSEA – Tristen Sedlar (157) and Chris Galloway (285) both won twice, but Ida opened the season by losing 66-16 to Hastings and 64-15 to Chelsea Wednesday.

Dundee called off

DUNDEE – Dundee was forced to cancel its season-opening quad meet Wednesday when to teams pulled out at the last minute.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carlson offense struggles

PLYMOUTH – Gibraltar Carlson never scored more than 8 points in a quarter and fell to 0-2 with a 52-21 loss to Plymouth Wednesday.

Abby Carafelli led the Marauders with 6 points.

PREP HOCKEY

Carlson clipped

TRENTON –Charlie Huntoon and Landen Angelos each had a goal and an assist in Gibraltar Carlson’s 3-2 loss to Detroit Country Day Tuesday.

Eli Kolasa and Jacob Monette also picked up assists.

PREP SWIMMING

Mason splits

ADRIAN – Luke Small won diving and Cameron Tross was first in the 100-yard freestyle and second in the 50 as Erie Mason beat Milan 107-58, but fell 96-84 to Adrian Tuesday.

Ben Heikka won the 500 freestyle and hit a lifetime best to take second in the individual medley. Tadas Zukovskis added a pair of seconds.

PREP BOWLING

Monroe falls short

MONROE – Evan Eagle shot 258 and 244, but Monroe’s boys fell 21-9 to Adrian Wednesday.

Patricia Reaume’s 182 lead Monroe’s girls in a 15.5-14.5 loss.

Monroe swept Saline Monday with the boys winning 28-2 and the girls taking a 23-7 triumph. Egale (221, 213) and Reaume (202) were the leaders.

Milan’s girls third

WESTLAND – Maggie Smith, Rachael Peladeau, Gabby Dryden, Elli Harvey, and Allison Jones led Milan’s girls to a third-place finish in the John Glenn Rocket Invitational Saturday.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

Bedford sweeps Monroe

TEMPERANCE – Bedford swept Monroe Wednesday with the eighth graders winning 26-11 and the seventh grade posting a 25-21 victory.

Henry Albring, Luke Whetstone and Lucas Thomas were Bedford standouts.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SWIMMING

Milan tops Erie Mason-Ida

ERIE – Brandon Tross won two events for Erie Mason-Ida in an 85-62 loss to Milan.

ADULT SOCCER

Melgarejo scores three

Geraldo Melgarejo scored three goals to lead Deportivo to a 5-2 win over Athletico in the Monroe Adult Coed Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday night.
