Local Sports: Ida, Carlson-Airport openers Friday; SMCC starts early

IDA – Two more Monroe County Region football games have been pushed back to Friday and one is starting a half-hour earlier.

Ida and Gibraltar Carlson will both play Friday instead of tonight. St. Mary Catholic Central will kick-off tonight at 6:30 instead of 7 p.m.

Carlson had to move its' game against Airport because of flooding on its football field. Ida's originally had pushed its game at Grosse Ile back an hour in an attempt to beat the extreme heat that was forecast. That put it right in the path of heavy rain that is being predicted around 9 p.m.

"It was a combination of things," Ida athletic director Tim Leonard said. "We decided to play it safe."

SMCC is trying to finish before thunderstorms are predicted to roll through Monroe County.

Just four games remain on the schedule for tonight: Jackson at Monroe, Warren Collegiate at St. Mary Catholic Central, Flat Rock at Dundee and Livonia Churchill at New Boston Huron.

Friday’s slate now features Airport at Carlson, Erie Mason at Jefferson, Bedford at Canton, Ida at Grosse Ile, Milan at Ypsilanti Lincoln, Summerfield at Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes and Whiteford at Blissfield.

All kickoffs are set for 7 p.m.
