Local Sports: Huron grad Toth holds narrow lead on Day 1 of La-Z-Boy Open

Tyler Toth took the lead on the first day of the 2023 La-Z-Boy Junior Open on Tuesday at Green Meadows Golf Course.

Toth, a recent graduate of New Boston Huron High School, carded a 72 to lead both the overall field and the boys 17-19 group. Grant Simpson (Tecumseh) was two strokes behind with a 74. Other early group leaders were Zackary Sisk (Gibraltar Carlson) and Connor Parisien (Lenawee Christian) with 75s, Newport native Blake Wagner and Carlson's Jase Marcott with 76s, and Connor Shappee (Flat Rock) with a 79.

Cooper Johnson of Sylvania led the boys 15-16 group with a 74. He finished the day three strokes ahead of Monroe's Brenden McCullough with a 77.

Brayden Siders carded a 77 for a comfortable nine-stroke lead in the boys 13-14 group. Liam Doll scored 36 to lead the nine-hole competition for the boys 12u group.

There were 55 boys entered into tournament. The girls tournament saw 11 entrants split into two groups.

Sophie Bucki (Airport) leads the overall field and the girls 16u group with a Day 1 score of 88. Nora Kinsey (St. Mary Catholic Central) is in second with a 95. Rylee Dunn (Jefferson) is leading the girls 17-19 group with a 95. That gave her a slight lead over Jefferson teammates Callie Calvin (96) and Kayce Maitland (97). Anna Cuccia (SMCC) also is in the mix with a 99.

Two hit aces

There were two hole-in-ones reported this past week at local golf courses.

Rose Kern aced the hole 2 on the executive course at Giant Oak Golf Club. She hit the 80-yard shot on July 20 with a 6-iron.

Kyle W. Phillips, 21, of Tecumseh, followed with a hole-in-one July 24 at Dundee Golf Club. The first ace of his career came at the No. 9 hole.
