Local Sports: Four Region teams crack first AP football rankings

Four Monroe County Region teams appear in the first Associated Press state football rankings of the season.

Defending state champion Whiteford is on top of the Division 8 rankings and Flat Rock is No. 7 in Division 5.

Airport (Division 4) and Summerfield (Division 8) also received votes.

Matley, Higgins lead

MILAN – Carter Higgings (3 goals, 2 assists) and Nolan Matley (2 goals, 3 assists) led Milan to an 8-0 victory over Flat Rock Monday.

Huron blitzes SMCC

MONROE – New Boston Huron got 2 goals and 2 assists from Ian Petrick in a 7-0 win over St. Mary Catholic Central Monday.

Mason Thomas also scored twice with Andy Traster picking up a goal and an assist.

Yusuf Alziadi and Johann Vasquez also scored and assists went to Jack Maxwell and Luke Hamilton.

SMCC goaltender Trent Zachel kept his team in the game.

“The SMCC goaslkeeper is amazing,” Huron coach Matt Lividini said. “If not for him the Chiefs would have tallied 13.”

SMCC starts right

MONROE – St. Mary Catholic Central opened its Huron League season with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-10 triumph over Grosse Ile.

The Kestrels (12-2-1 overall) were led by Olivia Beaudrie (11 kills, 8 digs), Jessica Costlow (10 kills, 14 digs), McKenna Payne (19 assists, 6 kills, 2 aces), Jillian Anderson (2 aces, 2 blocks), Analiese Flint (6 kills) and Ashley Ruhlig (8 digs).

Milan tops Airport

MILAN – Milan cruised past Airport 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 in its Huron League opener Monday.

Madi Boehm (19 digs), RaeAnn Drummond (8 kills), Peyton Zajac (9 assists,10 digs), Joelle Shrewsbury (7 assists, 9 digs) and Kamryn Palmer led 2-11-2 Airport).

Freshman lifts Rams

FLAT ROCK – Freshman Sarah Giroux rang up 15 kills, 15 digs, 5 aces and 4 blocks for Flat Rock in a 23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 win over Jefferson Monday.

Maddie Stager (13 kills, 4 digs, 2 blocks, 4 aces), Julia Bint (18 digs, 2 aces), Reagan Higdon (6 kills, 2 aces), Lily Klein (5 kills, 5 digs, 2 blocks) and Hannah Hesse (36 assists) also played well for the Rams.

Summerfield goes 2-1

VANDERCOOK LAKE – Mia Miller, Ava Fisher and Mia Samples led the way as Summerfield defeated Vandercook Lake 25-15; 25-14 and Jackson Christian 25-14; 25-11 Saturday, but fell to Morenci 25-20, 25-24.

Summerfield’s junior varsity lost a three-set battle with Ida in the finals of the Adrian Madison Tournament. Bridget Salenbien, Maya Stone and Skyler Johnson led the Bulldogs.

Bedford, Carlson split

TEMPERANCE – Bedford won all the singles matches as Gibraltar Carlson swept the doubles as the teams played to a 4-4 tie Monday.

PREP GOLF

Bucki shoots best

NEW BOSTON – Sophie Bucki birdied two of the first three holes and shot a career-best 40 to lead Airport to a 217-289 win over Flat Rock at Willow Metropark Monday.

Bedford takes second

ADRIAN – Jessi Gossard and Natalie Hackette each shot 101 and Lauren Werbiansky carded a 103 as Bedford took second place in the Adrian Invitational Monday.

The Mules finished with 425. Adrian won the event with 388.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL

Monroe falls short

WILLIS – Grady Brooks, Brendan Bacon and Malakhi Threatt scored touchdowns for Monroe in a 26-20 loss to Ypsilanti Lincoln Thursday.

ADULT SOCCER

Castrillon nets two

MONROE – Luis Castrillon scored two goals to lead Not Fast Just Furious to a 6-2 win over Athletico on opening night of the Monroe Adult Fall Indoor Coed Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday.

Ryan Murray and Habeeb Bello scored for Athletico.

YOUTH SOCCER

Commet does it all

MONROE – Kylie Commet scored two goals and stopped a penalty kick and Teagan Shappee also scored to lead Monroe United U-11 girls' team to a season-opening 3-1 win over MPSA Crush Saturday at Munson Park.
