Local Sports: Dundee, Bedford volleyball, Airport soccer win titles

MONROE – Dundee’s volleyball team made an undefeated run through the Monroe Tournament Saturday.

The Vikings whipped Romulus 25-6 25-3, Whiteford 25-16, 25‐19, Monroe 25-20, 25-17, and Gibraltar Carlson 25-23, 25-16.

Briley Bordine was outstanding on defense with 36 digs, Lola Salenbien racked up 49 assists and 9 aces, and a balanced hitting attack was led by Lilly Motylinksi (21 kills) and Kennedy Irwin (19 kills).

“We played very well, very well,” Dundee coach Keri Salenbien said. “The teamwork of this team is so good. They work so well together. If there are times where they make a few mistakes, they work it out on their own.”

Dundee is 15-3-2 under its new coach.

“I am very excited and very proud of this team,” Salenbien said.

Whiteford had a nice day, beating Romulus 25-6, 25-9 and Carlson 25-16, 25-18 and splitting with Monroe 19-25, 25-17.

Alaina McClain delivered 19 kills for the 4-8-2 Bobcats while Kenzie Gray (13 kills), Anna Schober (31 assists, 4 aces), Bailey Spradling (11 kills, 22 digs. 8 aces), and Liv Ruehle (37 digs) also played well.

Monroe followed the same path at Whiteford with wins over Romulus and Carlson and a loss to Dundee. The Trojans served at 95 percent and averaged 5 aces per set. Avery Leach led with 12 aces and Trinity Sieb served well and played strong defense.

Ally Younglove added 24 digs and 12 kills, Alana Aulph 23 digs, and Avery Colett 8 kills and 15 blocks.

Carlson beat Romulus for the only win in a 1-3 day. Addy Skinner, Kate Maher, Abby Carafelli, Zoe Stoltz, and Gianna Majeske led the Marauders.

Bedford captures crown

BAY CITY – Bedford crafted a 6-0 record to win the Mitten Bay Classic Saturday.

The Mules beat Essexville Garber 25-11, 25-15 in the finals after dispatching Cass City in the semifinals and Bay City Western in the quarterfinals.

Victoria Gray (39 kills, 29 digs, 8 blocks), Alivia Brown (22 kills, 26 digs), Jaelyn Hall (24 kills), Macy Madalynski (23 kills), Kadie Morse (20 kills), Mya Krohn (29 digs), Maddie Goforth (27 digs, 8 aces), and Kaylin Schroeder (107 assists, 29 digs) led the 23-1 Mules.

BOXING

Miller stays perfect

DETROIT – Derick Miller of Monroe ran his professional boxing record to 13-0 with a second-round technical knockout over Fernando DeAlmida of Brazil as the main event of a boxing card at the Motor City Casino Friday night.

“He dropped him in the first round, then switched to southpaw and dropped him two more times in the second,” said trainer Todd Riggs of Joe’s-ALCC Boxing Club. “It’s the best I’ve seen him look.”

Riggs hopes to get Miller back in the ring in October.

SOCCER

Jets win own tourney

CARLETON – Nolan Sanders keeps racking up the points for Airport.

The sophomore poured in five goals and contributed four assists to lead the Jets to the championship of its own invitational Saturday by beating Blissfield 2-0, Taylor 4-1, and Canton Prep 7-2.

Sanders owns 24 goals and 18 assists in 13 games this season.

“Some of the things he did on the field today were jaw-dropping,” Airport coach Goran Cepo said. “He works very hard and gets his teammates involved.”

Nolan Ortega added four goals and Isaiah Chapdelaine two. Other goal scorers were Skyylar Gonzalez and Carter Winnie. Tayton Ruhlig recorded a shutout against Blissfield.

Airport improved to 10-2-1.

“Tons of credit to these boys and the commitment they have taken on to always get better,” Cepo said. “They are a tremendous group of young men who make coaching fun again.”

Milan still unbeaten

MILAN – Milan pushed its record to 7-0-1 with a 4-2 victory over Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard on Saturday.

Carter Higgins converted a pair of penalty kicks into goals and Fred Brown and Caleb Klein also scored.

SWIMMING

Dundee wins six events

DUNDEE – Dundee won six events to take second place in the Southeastern Michigan Independent Swimming League Lower Division Relays Saturday.

The Vikings scored 350 points and finished 14 behind Riverview.

St. Mary Catholic Central was fifth with 208, Monroe sixth with 198, Erie Mason-Ida seventh with 162, and New Boston Huron-Taylor eighth with 92.

Dundee’s wins came in the 200-yard medley, 200 backstroke, 700 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 600 freestyle, and 200 over-under relays.

Natalie Bron, Lillian Ratliff, and Sara Carter each were on three winning relays. Kaylee Imo, Kaylee Dresbrough, Joslyn Ball, Lily Homrich, and Brook Hester were on two winning relays, and Allie Federer, Claire Dickerson, Delaney Hernandez, and Alexis Colby one each.

SMCC won the 200 freesytle with Monika Burkardt, Kaylee Kamprath, McKenzie Kidd and Maya Zaleski

Monroe was second in two relays and third in two others. Leaders were Delani Willey, Sophia Smith, Nicole Rykse, Abby Dieckmann, Lauren Lahna, and Madison Mahoney.

Jessica Lay, Summer Smith, Alexis Etue, Mia Balcerzak and Sophia Sorg were the top point winners for Mason-Ida.

CROSS COUNTRY

Bell takes first

MILFORD – Callum Bell was the boys winner in the Bronze Division (small schools) of the Averill Invitational at Kensington MetroPark Saturday.

Airport scored 60 points to finish second to Lansing Catholic with 33.

William Dobbertin was third, Adrian Dawes 12th, Hunter Rodak 24th, and Wyatt Kessell 25th for the Jets.

In the girls race, Airport’s Cecilia Ortega was second and Courtney Bovair was third. Airport was second in the team standings as Emily Sell ran 12th, Brenna Baker 21st, and Madison Kemp 25th.

Masters has best finish

NEW BOSTON – Whiteford’s Keegan Masters took seventh place with a time of 16:18.5 in Saturday’s Rambling Rock Invitational at Willow MetroPark.

Flat Rock's Jacob Stanislawski was 10th and Issak Rubley of Dundee placed 15th.

The best finish for a Monroe County Region girl was Megan Woelkers of Flat Rock in 19th.

Freshman leads Mules

TIFFIN, Ohio – Freshman Cam Varner ran a personal-best 16:50 to place 39th in a field of more than 200 runners in Saturday’s Tiffin Carnival.

Sophomore Dane Hieronimus also ran a personal-best 16:58 as Bedford took 15th in the team standings.

Jake Yeager, Brandon McCloud, Braiden Welch, and John Ball also ran well.

Campbell places 12th

GIBRALTAR – Parker Campbell took 12th place and helped Erie Mason’s boys place sixth in the Woodhaven Warrior Invitational Wednesday.

The Mason girls were eighth with Bailey Meiring running 23rd.

TENNIS

Nejedlik takes title

SOUTHGATE – Junior Jaxon Nejedlik won three straight matches to take the No. 1 singles title for Bedford in the Southgate invitational.

Bedford finished third in the team standings.
