Local Sports: Ash Carleton wins title; Red Storm dominant again

TECUMSEH – Kaden Appel’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Ash Carleton Blue the championship of the 12-and-under Little League District Tournament Sunday.

“This has been our goal for three years,” said Ash Carleton coach Jeff Kemp. “This is an absolute storybook ending for a group of boys who have stuck together in Little League for years.”

Ash Carleton had an 0-6 record against Tecumseh over the past three summers but beat the host team 7-3 and 4-3 in the finals this year.

PRO FOOTBALL

Red Storm romp

CEDAR SPRINGS – Jon Carrabino caught three touchdown passes and Ricky Jackson returned an interception for a score as the Southeast Michigan Red Storm routed the West Michigan Venom 60-0 Saturday.

The Red Storm dominated despite missing six starters.

Red Storm: Batwinas becomes a coach

“We went down there shorthanded, but we got the job done,” said defensive coordinator Mike Batwinas. “We were missing quite a few. Some new guys stepped up.”

It was the third straight shutout for the defense. Southeast Michigan has outscored its last three opponents 118-0.

The Red Storm (4-1) gets a chance to avenge its only loss of the season when it visits the Lansing Lightning Saturday.

BASEBALL

Blissfield goes 3-1

BLISSFIELD − Blissfield Post 325 went 3-1 in the Prep Baseball Report's Midwest Event tournament over the weekend.

Post 325 improved to 25-9 on the season. Seth Jones (Airport) picked up one of the wins and Jack Mills (Airport) went 5-for-11 and scored five runs in the four games.

Whiteford's Luke Rasor is also part of Post 325, which will host the state tournament July 25-29.

AUTO RACING

Flat Rock washed out

FLAT ROCK – Persistent rain forced the cancellation of the entire racing card at Flat Rock Speedway Saturday.

Flat Rock Speedway: Bergakker defends title

Action will resume with the track’s biggest event of the season, the Stan Yee Memorial, Saturday. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

MCCC camp concludes

Jaye Bomia, who will be a ninth grader at Bedford, won the free throw, layup, and one-on-one competitions for the sixth-ninth grade division at Fundamentals Camp at Monroe County Community College.

Ida fifth grader Chase Curry was the block-to-block winner for second-fifth grade.

Taking the other awards were Easton Bunkleman of Brighton and Mason McBride of Ada.

RUNNING

Pledge Run held

GIBRALTAR – Will Steinhour, Nolan West, Jacob Robinson, Jenna Pilachowski, and Riley Peer ran 11 miles from Gibraltar Carlson High School to Jefferson High School in the 17th annual Lake Erie Striders Pledge Run Sunday.

Alyssa Masserant ran 9 miles, Ben Merkel, Issac Masserant, Andrew Hintz, Joel Bezeau, and Mia Schroeder 8, Xander Hartunian and Luke Masserant 7, Kim Miller 6, and Marimar Esteban Chavez 2.
