LOCAL ROUNDUP: Westville boys win first Winter Wonderland title

Dec. 19—WESTVILLE — The Westville boys basketball team rolled to the inaugural Westville Winter Wonderland Shoot-out title on Saturday with a 60-36 win over Oblong-Palestine-Hustonville.

Drew Wichtowski had 21 points for the Tigers and was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, while Cam Steinbaugh had 12 points, Matthew Darling had eight points, Easton Barney had seven and Cade Schaumburg had eight points.

Barney was named to the All-Tournament team for Westville, who will take part in the Tri-County Holiday Tournament next week.

St. Anne 68, Hoopeston 60

WATSEKA — The Cornjerkers lost their first game at the Watseka Holiday Tournament on Saturday against the Cardinals.

Kendrick Sigerill had 22 points for Hoopeston Area, while Owen Root had 14 points, Wyatt Eisenmann had 11 points and Mason Rush added 10 points.

The Cornjerkers will have to settle for either third or fourth place today as they play Iroquois West today at 6:15 p.m.

BHRA goes 2-0 in weekend

BISMARCK — The Blue Devils beat Schlarman 62-19 on Friday and Bethesda Christian 55-38 on Saturday.

Against the Hilltoppers, Ayden Ingram had 20 points for Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin, while Caden Keleminic had 13, Chaz Dubois had 10 and Ethan Dubois had five points.

Jamarrea McNeal had 10 points to lead Schlarman Academy, while Noah Fowler added four points.

Against Bethesda Christian, Micah Stanford had 18 points, while Keison Peoples and Ingram each had 16 points.

The Blue Devils will face St. Joseph-Ogden today.

Oakwood 79, A-P 40

FITHIAN — The Oakwood boys basketball team took a big lead early and went on to beat Armstrong-Potomac 79-40.

Carsen Dudley had 25 points for the Comets, including 13 points in the first quarter, while Jackson Dudley had 12 points, Brody Taflinger had 10 points, Alec Harrison had nine and Bryson McDaniel and Cort Vermillion each had eight points.

Kollin Asbury had 18 points to lead the Trojans, who was down 45-22 at halftime, while Cole Bailey had six points, Luke Townsend and James Huisinga each had five points and Bowen Hesterberg added four points.

The Comets will play Tuscola at Monticello Holiday Hoopla on Dec. 26 while Armstrong-Potomac will take on Heritage in the BSN Classic on Dec. 27.

GEORGETOWN — Down in the fourth quarter, the Georgetown-Ridge Farm boys basketball rallied with 19 points to get a 57-47 win over Notre Dame De La Salette on Friday.

The Buffaloes were up 10-8 in the first quarter before the Lions took the 27-23 halftime lead and a 38-32 lead going into the fourth quarter.

A'John Watson had 19 points with eight points in the fourth for Geo-RF, while Jase Latoz had 14 points, Devin Vice had nine points with eight in the fourth and JJ Hall had six points.

Eamon Martin had 21 points for the Lions, while Charles Prather had 10 points, John Brauer had six and William Fitzpatrick and Elijah Hall each had five.

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Trojans lost to North Montgomery 51-48 on Saturday and went winless for the weekend.

Coye Ferguson had 17 points with seven rebounds and four blocks for Covington, while Curt Slider had 11 points, Max Waddell and Austin Stein each had six points with Stein getting five assists and Landon Herzog and Kolten Haymaker each had four points.

On Friday, the Trojans lost 58-47 to Lafayette Central Catholic. Stein had 12 points with five assists for the Trojans, who was down 34-20 at halftime, while Ferguson had 10 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, Slider had 10 points, Waddell had five points and 11 rebounds and Haymaker and Urban Roarks each had four points.

The Trojans will play Seeger on Thursday at the Bi-County Tournament.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Thomas More 55, Oakwood 36

FITHIAN — The Comets fell behind early and could not keep up with the Sabers on Saturday.

Jaydah Arrowsmith had 17 points for Oakwood, who was down 37-15 at halftime, while Nikita Taylor had 12 points and Gracie Hanner added five.

The Comets will face St. Joseph-Ogden on Thursday.

Covington 50, Terre Haute South 30

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Trojans built a strong lead and kept it throughout to beat Terre Haute South on Monday.

Alex Sutherlin had 12 points to lead Covington, while Lily Hacquet had 11 points, Sydni Crain and Peyton Brown each had 10 and Emma Holycross added five.

The Trojans were coming off a 50-21 win over South Vermillion on Saturday. Crain had 17, while Sutherlin had 10, Hacquet had eight points and Holycross and Brown each had six.

The Trojans will face Seeger on Thursday in the Bi-County Tournament.

PREP SWIMMING

Fountain Central girls win Bi-County

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The Mustang girls won nine events as they won the Bi-County title on Saturday.

Mary Rice won the 200 Individual Medley and 100 breaststroke for Fountain Central, while Haley Webb won the 200 freestyle, Alydia Mellady won the 50 freestyle, Elise Webb won the 100 butterfly and Peyton Hocking won in diving.

The 200 medley relay team of Josie Harshbarger, Rice, Elise Webb and Mellady, the 200 freestyle team of Rice, Allie Dotson, Haley Webb and Mellady and the 400 freestyle team of Dotson, Lilly Peterson, Elise Webb and Haley Webb also won for the Mustangs.

In the boys meet, Fountain Central was second to Seeger. Eli Davis won 50 freestyle, Eli Sowder won the 500 freestyle and William Armstrong won in diving.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Brody Larkin, Dallin Johnson, Hayden Kler and Davis also won for the Mustangs, who will next be in action Jan. 4 against Terre Haute North.

PREP WRESTLING

North Vermillion wins tourney

CAYUGA, Ind. — The Falcons went 5-0 as they won the North Vermillion Holiday Tournament on Saturday.

Wyatt Walters (132 pounds) went 5-0 for North Vermillion and also picked up his 100th career win, while Aden Rangel (126), Andrew Botner (144), Warren Pollard (150) and Aidan Hinchee (215) were also 5-0.

Fountain Central was second at 4-1 with Dallas Simmons (120), Dakoda Willoughby (138), Brandon Pigg (157) and Andrew Mendoza (285) each going 5-0.

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

DACC 69, Prairie State 65

DANVILLE — The Jaguars hung on to get the win over the Pioneers on Saturday at Mary Miller Gym.

Darius Davis had 18 points, five assists and four steals for Danville Area Community College, while Jameer Ajibade had 13 points and 11 rebounds, Terrence Ringo had 13 points and eight rebounds and Payton Weemer had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Jaguars will play Moraine Valley Community College on Wednesday.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

DACC 91, Highland 57

DANVILLE — The Lady Jaguars jumped out to a 29-7 first quarter lead and went from there to get the win over Highland.

Keiara Gregory had 28 points, six steal sand five assists for Danville Area Community College, while Jayla Greer had 19 points and four assists, Wariya Alhassan had 13 points and 13 rebounds, Jillisa Briggs had 10 points, Brianna Hamilton had nine points and seven rebounds and Rylee Dowers had six points with nine rebounds and six assists.

The Lady Jaguars would play again on Monday, beating Lincoln Trail 79-65. Gregory had 32 points, Greer had 12 points, Alhassan had nine points and 12 rebounds, Briggs had nine points and eight rebounds, Hamilton had eight points and Dowers had seven points and seven assists.

Missouri 69, Illinois 66

CHAMPAIGN — In another close Braggin Rights game with 14 lead changes and eight ties, the Illini came up short against the Tigers.

Genesis Bryant had 20 points, six rebounds and two steals for Illinois, while Kendall Bostic had 18 points and nine rebounds and Adalia McKenzie had seven points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Makira Cook had nine points and four assists for Illinois, who is 5-4 and will play No. 16 Indiana on Dec. 31 to start Big Ten action.
