LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wesleyan beats Southwest in girls soccer

Mar. 1—HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian pulled away to beat Southwest Guilford 5-1 in nonconference girls soccer Thursday evening at Wesleyan' Sanford Field.

Madison Casteen had three goals and one assist to lead the Trojans (2-1), who led 2-0 at halftime and scored a flurry of goals late in the second half. Ava Peele and Caroline Heywood each had a goal and an assist.

Kyla Denton and Chapel Byrd each chipped in an assist, and McKinlee Graver made four saves in goal

Rachel Dee scored for the Cowgirls (0-1), while Laurel Collins, who made a handful challenging saves, was in goal.

EAST DAVIDSON, McMICHAEL

MAYODAN — East Davidson raced past McMichael in nonconference girls soccer Thursday at McMichael. The Golden Eagles opened their season 1-0.

LEDFORD, GLENN

WALLBURG — Ledford defeated Glenn 4-1 in nonconference girls soccer Thursday at Ledford.

Maddie McCormack, Carmen Hughes, Maggie Eccard and Mackenzie Knight each scored for the Panthers (1-0), while Katelyn Hemric had two assists. Sanna Simpson made two saves in goal.

Cameron Casas scored for the Ladycats (0-1), while Kirin Stewart made 16 saves in goal.

RAGSDALE, BETHANY COMMUNITY

JAMESTOWN — Ragsdale beat Bethany Community 7-0 in nonconference girls soccer Thursday at Ragsdale. The Tigers improved to 2-0.

SOFTBALL

HIGH POINT CENTRAL, T.W. ANDREWS

HIGH POINT — High Point Central beat rival T.W. Andrews 27-2 in nonconference softball Thursday at Montlieu Elementary.

Idalis Underhill went 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, a home run and six RBIs to lead the Bison. Zeira Robles-Rojas added three hits and an RBI, while Aaliyah Pinedo and Tiffany Feggins each had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. J'Niyah Ervin also had two hits and two RBIs.

Robles-Rojas and Ervin pitched for Central.

The Bison improved to 1-0 while the Red Raiders dipped to 0-1.

WHEATMORE, SOUTWHEST GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Wheatmore defeated Southwest Guilford 8-5 in nonconference softball Thursday at Southwest.

Maddie Nichols went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBIs to lead the Warriors (1-0), who scored four runs in the sixth to lead 8-3. Hannah Shoe had two hits, including a double. Adalyn Boles, who doubled, and Arielle Turgeon, who tripled, each had a hit and two RBIs.

Carmen Turgeon got the complete-game win, striking out 12.

Makayla Stefanik had three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI to lead the Cowgirls (1-1). Caroline Christman added a hit and two RBIs, while Camren Allen had a hit and an RBI. Christman struck out four in six innings in the circle, while Miracle Kendrick added one hitless inning.

HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, EAST FORSYTH

WALLBURG — High Point Christian rolled past East Forsyth 21-6 in three innings in nonconference softball Thursday at Wallburg Baptist Church.

Kerri Langfitt went 4 for 4 for the Cougars (1-0). Blakely Bowman, Laci Jarrell, Maci Burkhart, Hailey Allred, Madison Benson and Lila Allred each had two hits, while Paisley Dixon had one hit and Landyn Smith stole two bases.

Dixon got the pitching win, scattering five hits.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, COVENANT DAY

MATTHEWS — Wesleyan Christian defeated Covenant Day 12-2 in nonconference softball Thursday at Covenant Day.

Juli Abantohollans had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Trojans (1-0), who led 6-2 through five innings. Maris Morgan added two hits, including a double, and an RBI while Mackenzie Smith had a double and two RBIs.

Morgan earned the complete-game pitching win, striking out four.

EAST DAVIDSON, GLENN

KERNERSVILLE — East Davidson beat Glenn 17-1 in four innings in nonconference softball Thursday at Glenn. The Golden Eagles opened their season 1-0 while the Ladycats dipped to 0-2.

LEDFORD, SOUTHERN GUILFORD

SUMNER — Ledford defeated Southern Guilford 18-8 in six innings in nonconference softball Thursday at Southern.

Leah Leonard had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Panthers (1-0). Hailey Hoots, who doubled, and Ava Francis each had two hits and three RBIs. Maggie Hughes had two hits and two RBIs.

Ivye Francis got the pitching win in 2 2/3 innings.

Bracey Griggs doubled and drove in two while Naomi Hunt and Avery Lowe each had a hit and two in two for the Storm (0-2). Griggs took the loss, striking out two in six innings.

OAK GROVE, FORBUSH

EAST BEND — Oak Grove shut out Forbush 7-0 in nonconference softball Thursday at Forbush.

Chloe Watkins had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs to lead the Grizzlies (2-0). Chloe Smith added two hits and two RBIs, while Carly White chipped in two hits, including a double. Abby Cruz also had two RBIs.

Mary Peyton Hodge got the complete-game win, striking out 13.

RAGSDALE, ATKINS

JAMESTOWN — Ragsdale won 15-5 against Atkins in nonconference softball Thursday at Ragsdale. The Tigers opened their season 1-0.

TRINITY, ASHEBORO

ASHEBORO — Trinity won 17-13 against Asheboro in nonconference softball Thursday at Asheboro.

Kaitlyn McCoy had four hits, including a double, for the Bulldogs (1-0). Faith Powell added three hits, including a double, while Carlie Roberts, Kara Stevens Dagenhart and Eva Porter each had two hits.

Jessica Ann Huneycutt got the pitching win, striking out 15.

THOMASVILLE, HIGH POINT CENTRAL

THOMASVILLE — Thomasville topped High Point Central 2-0 in nonconference girls soccer Thursday at Thomasville. The Bulldogs improved to 1-0 while the Bison dipped to 0-2.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, WESTERN GUILFORD

GREENSBORO — Southwest Guilford won 8-1 against Western Guilford in Metro 4A Conference boys tennis Wednesday at Western.

Alex Toney (6-1, 6-2), Grant Prevatt (6-0, 6-0), Aryan Shah (6-1, 7-5), Lucas Ray (6-0, 6-0) and Josh Boger (6-0, 6-0) won in singles for the Cowboys (1-1). Jack Perko/Toney (8-3), Prevatt/Johnny Vo (8-5) and Ben Vikner/Lance Carter (8-3) won in doubles.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, CALVARY DAY

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian defeated Calvary Day 7-2 in PTAC boys tennis Thursday at Wesleyan.

Henry Henning won a third-set tiebreaker to earn a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 victory at No. 1 singles. Eli Henning won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and Lucas Newton won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Patrick Greene and Tyler Layman added a 9-8(7-4) win at No. 2 doubles to highlight the Trojans.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, MOUNT AIRY

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness edged visiting Mount Airy 5-4 in nonconference boys tennis Thursday.

Luke Ansari (6-0, 6-2), Tyler Sturgill (6-3, 2-6, 10-6), Chase Wiedwald (6-0, 6-2) and Hayden Connor (7-5, 6-3) won in singles for the Villains (2-0). Ansari/Luke Holton (8-1) won in doubles.

LEDFORD, SMITH

WALLBURG — Ledford swept Smith 9-0 in nonconference boys tennis Thursday at Ledford.

Logan Thoma (6-2, 6-2), Drew Hundley (6-2, 6-1), Zane Stowe (6-0, 6-0) and Emiliano Santillan (6-0, 6-0) were among the Panthers' singles winners. Stowe/Hundley (8-6), Zeno Sabri/Jerry Tedder (8-6) and Raul Reyes/Adrian San Jorge (8-4) won in doubles for Ledford, which improved to 2-0.

LACROSSE

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, GRIMSLEY

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford lost 9-2 against Grimsley in Metro 4A Conference boys lacrosse Thursday at Southwest. In the girls match, the Cowgirls fell 7-0. Both Southwest teams moved to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, EAST FORSYTH

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness raced past East Forsyth 14-4 in nonconference girls lacrosse Thursday at East Forsyth.

Kate Dennen had six goals and an assist for the Villains (2-0). Ella Suire added four goals and three assists, while Sarah Pulliam had three goals, Marian Waterman had a goal and Stella Ropko had an assist.

Grace Khol (seven saves) and Maddie Edwards (one save) split time in goal.

In the boys game, Bishop fell 12-11 to move to 1-1. John Miller scored four goals, while Matthew Cetrone had two goals and an assist. Mason Payne and Nick Hargett each had two goals while Miles Fuehler had one.

BASEBALL

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, MOUNT TABOR

WINSTON-SALEM — Southwest Guilford won 14-2 in five innings against Mount Tabor in nonconference baseball Thursday at Mount Tabor.

Aidan McPherson had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Cowboys (2-0), who scored 10 runs in the third. Devin Hernandez added a hit and two RBIs, while Kaden Morgan also had two RBIs.

Morgan got the pitching win, striking out 11 in four innings. McPherson added an inning of relief.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, CHELSEA

HOOVER, Ala. — Wesleyan Christian won 10-0 against Chelsea (Ala.) on Thursday in the Perfect Game National High School Showdown.

Hudson Lance had two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs for the Trojans (1-0). Sawyer Black homered, doubled and drove in two, while Grayson McDonald had two hits and two RBIs and Myles Crocker homered and drove in two.

Lance also got the pitching win, striking out five while allowing just two hits and a walk in five innings. Nick Papciak struck out two of the three batters he faced as well.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, DUDLEY

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness defeated Dudley 12-2 in five innings Thursday in nonconference baseball at Bishop.

Will Valente went 2 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Villains (1-0), who led 6-1 through two innings. Luke O'Connor added a hit and two RBIs. Spencer Richard got the pitching win, striking out nine in four innings.

TRINITY, ASHEBORO

ASEHBORO — Trinity topped Asheboro 9-7 in nonconference baseball Thursday at Asheboro.

Andon Simmons got the pitching win for the Bulldogs (2-0).

WHEATMORE, WEST DAVIDSON

TRINITY — Wheatmore lost 5-1 in eight innings against West Davidson in nonconference baseball Thursday at Wheatmore.

Ayden Byrd had a hit, a sacrifice fly and an RBI for the Warriors (1-1). Clay Hill also had a hit. Sean Jennison struck out eight in five innings, while Carson Work and Byrd both provided solid relief.

BOYS GOLF

AT MACGREGOR DOWNS

CARY — High Point Christian fired a team score of 337 during Thursday's boys golf match at MacGregor Downs Country Club.

Cameron Crumpler shot a 38-43 — 81 to lead the Cougars. Jace Harris added a 40-44 — 84, followed by Carter Medline with a 44-41 — 85 and Mason Mosier with a 41-46 — 87.
