LOCAL ROUNDUP: Weatherly, Tamaqua, PV post softball wins

Apr. 25—Marissa Hoffman stroked two singles and a double and drove in three runs Saturday to power Weatherly to a non-league win over MMI Prep in Foster Township.

Kelly Michaels added three singles and one RBI for the Lady Wreckers, who surpassed the 2019 team's win total (7-13).

Maddie vonFrisch pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven, and was backed by errorless ball in the field.

Grace Warner doubled for MMI's lone hit.

Tamaqua 12 Jim Thorpe 4

Bryn Clifford struck out 13 batters and scattered eight hits in Saturday's Schuylkill League Division I victory over Jim Thorpe.

Tamaqua scored in each of the first four innings to build an 11-1 lead, and coasted from there.

Clifford helped her own cause with a two-run double, and was backed by a 12-hit attack led by Ella McLaughlin's four hits, including a home run and three RBIs. Riley Zenenfuse tripled, Alexus Warne was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Courtney Loar and Trenyce Wingler each drove in two runs.

Kristin Pompa went 3-for-4 with a triple, and Carsen Rosenberger doubled for Jim Thorpe.

Panther Valley 16 Lincoln Leadership 3

Panther Valley broke into the win column for the first time this spring, beating Lincoln Leadership in a five-inning non-conference game Saturday.

The Lady Panthers scored three times in the first and stretched their lead to 8-0 with a five-run second, pulling away from there.

Cierra Ohl pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts, and helped herself at the plate with three singles for PV (1-9). Brenna Beshock tripled and singled, Mickayla Yuricheck legged out a triple, and Alexis Cooper and Lexi Rex both singled twice.

H.S. Tennis Pottsville 4 Hazleton Area 1

Hazleton Area's Kittrick Danzeisen earned a win at No. 1 singles, but the Cougars came up short in their non-league match with Pottsville on Saturday.

Danzeisen turned back the Tide's Ken Wolff by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.

At second singles, Pottsville's Tyler Diehl outlasted Cameron Zynel 7-5, 6-1; and at third singles, Pottsville's Matt Garland defeated Maxwell Hsiao 6-3, 6-1.

Both doubles went to Pottsville by forfeit.

H.S. Girls' Lacrosse Dallas 8 Hazleton Area 3

Riley Hudock scored two goals, including the 50th of her career, in Hazleton Area's WVC setback to Dallas.

After Kailyn Conrad scored for Dallas, Hudock scored off an assist from Grace Gudich to tie things at 1-1.

The Mounts scored two times to grab a 3-1 lead, but Hudock scored her 50th before intermission, off a Lily Palfey assist, to cut it to 3-2 at the half.

Dallas took control in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals for a 7-2 cushion.

Palfey scored the Lady Cougars' final goal.

Hudock and Kaci Kilker had the most shots on goal, Taylor Kilker the most ground ball recoveries, and Abby Bellas made 16 saves in goal for Hazleton Area.

Jr. High Softball Pittston Area 28 Hazleton Area 22

Hazleton Area put up 22 runs, and had three players with five hits, but Pittston Area plated 28 runs to outlast the Lady Cougars in a marathon.

Olivia Williams led the way at the plate for Hazleton Area, going 5-for-6 with two triples, a double, and nine RBIs. Cali Jurus (5-for-6) collected four singles, a triple, and three RBIs, and Nanci Major (5-for-6) had a double, four singles and three RBIs.

Losing pitcher Elia Tito went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and Lily Sweich had two singles and an RBI for Hazleton Area.

Gorzowski went 4-for-5 with a home run and six RBIs, and Herbort was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four runs batted in for Pittston Area.

Hazleton Area visits Wilkes-Barre Area on Wednesday.
