A local man and his church help orphans and refugees in war-torn Ukraine

A local man is in Ukraine, helping orphans and refugees leave Ukraine and escape the war. He’s working with one organization to provide that assistance. Throughout Metro Atlanta, many organization have started campaigns to help those in Ukraine.

“We’re all about taking care of orphans,” said Coleman Bailey with Serving Orphans Worldwide.

Coleman Bailey said that’s their sole mission. Right now, they’re focusing on helping those in need in Ukraine. “I specifically work with our children homes in Africa and Ukraine. Across Ukraine, we have five children homes.”

Channel 2′s Larry Spruill talked to Bailey over Zoom on Friday afternoon. “I was here just a few days after the war. I was actually in Uganda right when the invasion happened. I booked it up here as quickly as I could. What I’m doing here now is after we evacuated all of these children. We evacuated a lot of them to Germany and other places like that,” said Bailey.

“Um, just in terms of children from orphanages, it’s 310. But on top of that, there’s staff that we moved out of the country as well. There’s about another 150 staff we helped out of the country,” said Bailey.

Bailey said they have to be careful, because of the horrific conditions, “Every single day, it’s like you wake up and the nightmare is reality. In Mariupol, the living conditions are just absolutely terrible. We haven’t been able to verify it, but we’re pretty sure our orphanage there is completely destroyed. The church there is completely destroyed. Every one of our staff members, theirs homes have been completely destroyed over there in Mariupol,” said Bailey.

He also talked about why he is doing this and why he is risking his life, “Every single one of these people, their life is just as valuable as mine. They bleed, just like I do. They have a heart that beats, just like I do, so my life is not more valuable than their life,” said Bailey.

If you want to help out those in Ukraine, local church Siloam Church International is collecting supplies, Mondays to Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church.

They will also host a ‘Drive Through Drop Off’ on April 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The church will be sorting, packing and labeling the boxes for shipment to Ukraine. Volunteers can register at info@siloamchurchint.org.
