Local Little Leaguers compete in district tournaments

Jun. 30—UPDATE: Added final scores from Friday, Saturday games.

Several Twin Harbors Little League baseball teams are in the throws of postseason competition throughout late June and into early July.

Here's a look at how local teams fared in their respective District 3 competitions.

8-10 Championship Round 1

Larch Mountain 9, Montesano 3

Montesano was unable to hold off a solid performance from the Larch Mountain offense in a 9-3 loss in the championship round of the Little League District 3 8-10 Tournament on Thursday at Lloyd Murrey Park in Elma.

Needing a victory to stave off elimination and force a decisive final game, Montesano was locked in a 1-1 tie as each team scored in the first inning.

The Monte all-stars trailed 2-1 before third baseman Tyson James poked a two-out, opposite-field base hit to chase home Ryker Chatham and Madden Maruska, giving Montesano a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third.

Larch Mountain responded by loading the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth and tied the game when Maruska walked Coco Caruso with one out.

Quinten Canales then drove in a run on a fielder's choice fly ball to short right field to give Larch Mountain a 4-3 lead.

Brady Hammond stepped to the plate and singled to right, scoring Kyle Verd. The ball skipped past the Montesano outfielder, allowing Canales to score from first on the play and pushed Larch Mountain's lead to 6-3.

Montesano would load the bases in the fourth and had two on with one out in the fifth but failed to push across another run.

Larch Mountain blew the game open in the top of the sixth with three runs — including an unearned run on an error and another on a hit batter with the bases loaded — to take a 9-3 lead into the last half of the sixth.

Jones led off the frame with a double, but Larch Mountain relief pitcher RJ Calica struck out the next three batters to hand Montesano the loss.

Maruska took the defeat, allowing six runs — four earned — on five hits, four walks and four strikeouts over 3 2-3 innings pitched.
