Local Football Roundup: Powers gets another dominant football win

Oct. 17—Powers kept its season record perfect in the Class 1A six-player division with another dominant win on Friday.

The Cruisers downed Riddle 64-18 to improve to 6-0 in league play and 7-0 overall going into this week's showdown with Elkton for the division title in the District 2 South Division.

The Elks also are 6-0 in league play heading into their game at 3 p.m. Friday.

Powers was No. 2 in this week's coaches poll. Elkton was No. 8.

NORTH BEND 28, HIDDEN VALLEY 26: The Bulldogs edged the visiting Mustangs on Miss Flame night to improve to 3-1 in Class 4A District 4 heading into the final two weeks of the season.

North Bend visits Ashland in another key game this week with a chance to secure a spot in the postseason. North Bend, which was No. 8 in this week's coaches poll, finishes at home against Henley, which shares first place with Mazama, both 4-0. The league gets three automatic berths into the playoffs and North Bend holds the tiebreaker over fourth-place Marshfield because the Bulldogs beat the Pirates in their head-to-head matchup.

HENLEY 63, MARSHFIELD 18: The Hornets topped the visiting Pirates on Friday, snapping Marshfield's three-game win streak.

The Pirates are on the road again this week in Grants Pass against Hidden Valley in a key contest. With two weeks to go in the season, Marshfield has the highest spot in the power rankings among teams not in the top three in their leagues. If that is still the case at the end of the season, even with a fourth-place finish the Pirates would get the one at-large berth to the postseason.

SOUTH UMPQUA 10, COQUILLE 0: The Red Devils were shut out at home for the second straight week and now face long odds to continue a long streak of reaching the playoffs.

The last time Coquille did not reach the postseason in a full season was 2009.

But the loss to the Lancers left Coquille at 3-4 in league play with games remaining at Douglas this week and at St. Mary's next week. Even if the Red Devils can get to 5-4 in the Far West League, they have losses to the top four teams in the standings. And their spot in the power rankings currently would not qualify for the lone at-large bid for Class 3A.

OAKLAND 28, BANDON 7: The Tigers lost for the third straight week, dropping to 4-3 on the season and 2-3 in Class 2A District 3.

The schedule gets easier for the final two weeks, with Bandon visiting Reedsport this week and hosting Rogue River the final week, and the Tigers are still at No. 9 in the OSAA power rankings, which would put the Tigers in the playoffs even if they finish fourth in the standings. Their losses have come to the three teams above them — Oakland and Gold Beach both are 5-0 and Illinois Valley is 4-1. Gold Beach blanked Rogue River 38-0 and hosts Illinois Valley this week before traveling to Oakland for the regular-season finale.

Oakland was fifth, Gold Beach sixth and Bandon seventh in this week's coaches poll for Class 2A.

GLIDE 19, REEDPSORT 0: The Brave fell to the host Wildcats and are 1-4 in league play heading into this week's game at Bandon. The Brave finish the season at the combined North Douglas-Yoncalla team next week.

BOBCATS BYE: Myrtle Point had a bye in the schedule before a big home game this Thursday against Crosspoint Christian of Klamath Falls. Both teams are 2-1 in Class 1A eight-player District 1.

Myrtle Point finishes the regular season next week at Camas Valley and the Bobcats likely will advance to the playoffs, given their spot at No. 4 in the OSAA power rankings (they are No. 2 in the coaches poll).
