LOCAL CONNECTIONS: Henderson earns Sun Belt honors

Sep. 12—Old Dominion University junior All-American linebacker Jason Henderson (Delaware Valley) was chosen Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

In a 38-31 win over Louisiana, Henderson had 17 tackles (3 solo, 14 assists) and 2 1/2 tackles for loss. It is the second time in his career he earned the award. He also took the honor last year after ODU's season-opening win over Virginia Tech.

Last season, he led the Football Bowl Subdivision in tackles with 186. Through two games this season, Henderson has 28 tackles (7, 21). He ranks third in the nation in tackles per game at 14.

Only two games into his junior year and Henderson already is fourth on the school's career tackles list with 292 (100,192).

The Monarchs (1-1) host Wake Forest on Saturday.

Career first

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute junior running back Christian Buckley (Dunmore) scored his first collegiate touchdown in the Engineers' 38-14 win over Wilkes University.

It came with 11:39 left in the third quarter and capped a three-play, 73-yard drive that made the score 28-7.

Buckley finished with

71 yards on 14 carries.

Record romp

United States Coast Guard Academy junior defensive back Nico Berrios (Lackawanna Trail) had three solo tackles, six pass breakups and one interception in a 93-24 victory over Anna Maria College.

The Bears set single-game school records for points and total yards of offense (754).

Berrios' interception was one of six by the Coast Guard defense.

Senior Ezra Tetreault (Western Wayne) had three kickoff returns for 26 yards in the victory.

NYU senior Catie Collins (Scranton Prep) is a tri-captain for the women's soccer team. She scored a goal in each of the first three games. The Violets are off to a 4-0 start, outscoring the opposition, 17-0. ... Neumann University senior Morghan Stiles (Abington Heights) was named captain of the women's soccer team for this season. ... At the Lebanon Valley Dutchman Cross Country Invitational, West Chester University junior Abby Marion (Abington Heights) finished 38th out of 178 runners in 21:03.5 on the 5,000-meter course. Widener University sophomore Kathryn Long (Mountain View) was 50th in 21:18.0. In the men's 8,000-meter run, West Chester freshman Luke Pikulski (Scranton) placed 55th out of 153 runners in 29:07.1. ... Lock Haven University sophomore Krista Jones (Elk Lake) finished 32nd out of 94 runners in 24:05.67 in the women's 6,000-meter run at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland. ... Widener University sophomore field hockey goalie Lilly Rejrat (Lackawanna Trail) was named MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 3. Rejrat played 90 minutes, allowed two goals and made 16 saves as Widener split its first two games.
