Sep. 11—Around the region

— Freshman Jess English (Ledyard) has played in the first five games for the WPI women's soccer team. Connor Piper (East Lyme) is a freshman goalie and Aidan McLouglin (Bacon Academy) is a sophomore midfielder for the men's soccer team.

Also at WPI, junior Sean Corman (Waterford) helped the men's cross country team capture the 2023 Smith Invitational Saturday in Northampton, Mass., by placing 20th in 17 minutes, 7.64 seconds.

Junior Elie Bowman (Montville) finished 12th for the women's cross country team at the Smith Invitational with a time of 20:16.72. WPI placed second overall.

— At Springfield College, Meredith Healy (East Lyme) is making an impact as a member of the women's soccer team. A starter, she has scored two goals through four games.

Freshman cross country runner Kayleigh Jensen (East Lyme) finished 46th in 22:11.72 at the Smith Invitational.

Senior Blane Hart (East Lyme) rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown in the football team's 45-20 win over Husson on Saturday. Freshman James Green (Ledyard) rushed for five yards on his only carry.

— Graduate runner Sam Whittaker (East Lyme) paced the Central Connecticut State University men's cross country team to first place in the LIU Fall Festival on Saturday. He finished second in the 8K race with a time of 25:32.6.

Junior Victoria Violette (Bacon Academy) started the first seven games for the women's soccer team.

Sophomore offensive lineman Rahtrel Perry (New London) saw action for the football team on Saturday in a 33-30 loss to Stonehill.

— Kennedy Holsapple (East Lyme) is continuing her cross country career at St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt.

— After earning Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer rookie of the year honors, midfielder Tim Lynch (Fitch) is a key player once again this season for Endicott College. He started the first four games for the Gulls.

Also at Endicott, starting defender Angelina Venditti (East Lyme) is in her senior season with the women's soccer team and sophomore Enzo Guarnieri (Waterford) is part of the cross country program. Brianna am Ende (East Lyme), a junior, placed ninth in 20:22.8 at the Battle of the North Shore meet in Wenham, Mass.

— Will Sutman (Waterford) is a first year defensive lineman for the Sacred Heart University football team while freshman Jacob Strain (Griswold) is running cross country.

— Kuranda Ruggiero (Griswold), The Day's 2023 All-Area volleyball player of the year, is a freshman on Army's team.

— Freshman Ryan Gruczka (Stonington) is on the Northeastern men's cross country team.

— Magda Carpenter (Lyman Memorial), a freshman midfielder, is playing a starting role for the Daemen University women's soccer team.

— At Eastern Connecticut State University, Norwich Free Academy is well-represented on the men's cross country roster with former Wildcats Ashton Croteau, Digby Ludlow and Dylan McGuire.

Freshman forward Sophie Ash (Fitch) has appeared in two games for the field hockey team while junior Olivia Davidson (Waterford) is helping to anchor the defense for the women's soccer program and Nico Matteucci (Bacon Academy) and Reid Dowling (East Lyme) are freshmen members of the men's program.

— Jonathan Russack-Baker (Fitch), a graduate student, posted a time of 31:43.5 for the Western Connecticut State University men's cross country team at Wesleyan University's Cardinal Invitational on Saturday.

On the football field, senior Noah Perry (East Lyme) is a backup quarterback. Junior Helen Megson (Lyman Memorial) ranks second on the volleyball team in kills with 40 through five matches.

— At Southern Connecticut State University, junior Shea Kenney (Fitch) ran a 5K race at the Nassaney Cross Country Invitational Saturday in 17:20.4.

Sophomore Sarah Johnson (Waterford) has joined the women's cross country program after transferring from Stonehill while sophomore midfielder Aimee Girard (Waterford) started two of the first three games for the women's soccer program.

— Junior defensive back Nazaiah Paul (NFA), who previously attended Monroe Junior College, made a tackle in New Haven's 14-13 win over Bentley College on Saturday.

On the soccer field, sophomore goalie Caitlyn Daley (NFA) made six saves in New Haven's 2-0 shutout of Georgian Court on Saturday. Daley owns a sparkling 0.33 goals against average through three games.

— The UMass Dartmouth football roster is loaded with former Eastern Connecticut Conference players, including senior defensive back Logan Chappell (Griswold), junior wide receiver Mike Vincent (Waterford), junior wide receiver Antonio Brown (Montville), freshman running back Josiah Williams (New London), senior linebacker Jaydon Lame (NFA), graduate offensive lineman Liam Whaley (East Lyme) and freshman offensive lineman Patrick Daley (St. Bernard).

In Saturday's 28-14 win over Curry, Brown caught two passes for 87 yards and Chappell had five tackles and a sack.

A sophomore cross country runner, Tori Schweitzer (Ledyard) took 23rd overall with a 3K course time of 13:50.70 at the Wheaton & Babson Invitational on Sept. 2.

— Junior Kelsi Ursini (Fitch) scored her first goal of the season for the University of Saint Joseph women's soccer team in a 5-1 win over New England College on Saturday.

Tracking the Bears

— Coast Guard Academy sophomore wide receiver Broock Desta earned NEWMAC football offensive player of the week honors after catching seven passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns in a 93-24 rout of Anna Maria.

Camel highlights

— Mya Johnson (Old Lyme) returned to Connecticut College for a graduate season with the women's soccer program. She also brought back her scoring touch, accounting for two goals and an assist in the first two games.

Mariners riding a wave

— Newcomers are making an impact for the Mitchell College women's soccer team. Freshman Haley Jeske leads the team in scoring with seven points on three goals and an assist through four games and freshman Morgan Fontaine ranks second with six points on three goals.

— The men's soccer team is undefeated through three games at 1-0-2. Junior Dylan Lucey (Lyman Memorial) has accounted for two of the team's five goals. Goalie Jessie Jenkins was selected as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference rookie of the week after allowing one goal in two games while posting his first shutout at Elms College.
