France vs Morocco, World Cup 2022 result: Deschamps' defending champions book final spot

For the Frenchmen now contemplating a second successive World Cup, including their great star Kylian Mbappe, a place among the greats beckons: only 21 men in history have won it more than once, and only four of them were European.
Sunday’s final between France and Argentina will also be viewed as Mbappe against Lionel Messi, and what it means for their respective places in the great canon of the game. For Mbappe to be a double World Cup winner at the age of 23 would mean only Pele, the one man to have won the World Cup three times, would stand above him. For Messi, at 35, it means something different and defeating the defending champions would be his crowning glory.
This France team have not blinked in the toughest moments, either at the Al Bayt Stadium four days earlier in their quarter-final win over England or now against the Atlas Lions whose fans filled the stadium in the desert. Illness had denied Deschamps’ key players in Adrien Rabiot, Dayot Upamecano and Kingsley Coman but this squad of Les Bleus runs deep. It was eventually the substitute Randal Kolo Muani who scored the second, his first international goal on his fourth cap.
The France support was a tiny pocket of fans behind the goal they attacked in the second half - and the rest was the red of the first African team to make the last four of the competition. Didier Deschamps’ side were booed and whistled in possession of which they claimed just 34 per cent. Mbappe was rarely allowed to break free, yet in the closing stages it was he who scattered the pieces in the Morocco area to create France’s second.
A hard night for Walid Regragui’s Morocco who fought valiantly. Their plans to sit in that 4-5-1 formation and wait for their opportunities were turned upside down by the fifth minute French goal, brilliantly taken by the full-back Theo Hernandez. By the second half Morocco were obliged to go on the front foot. They did so boldly. At full-time they toppled almost to a man to the ground and many of their opponents first went among them to offer condolences.
Mbappe is still pure unfettered youthful acceleration, only once really breaking free in this game and finally stopped by a spectacular – and spectacularly risky – challenge from Sofyan Amrabat. It feels like Mbappe has another big game in him. Four years earlier, he scored twice in the second half of France’s 4-3 win over Argentina in the second round of the 2018 World Cup finals.
“Messi has been in scintillating form,” Deschamps said. “Four years ago things were different. He played as a centre forward against us which caught us by surprise, whereas now he’s playing just behind the centre-forward. He’s picking up the ball a lot and running with it. He’s in great form.”
Deschamps was congratulated in the dressing rooms by the France president Emmanuel Macron, and he too is close to a unique place in history. A World Cup victory as a captain and now on the brink of his second as coach. He made the big substitute calls right bringing on Marcus Thuram and Kolo Muani, both influential in the latter stages of the game. Afterwards, he refused to answer as to whether he might even bring back Karim Benzema, still eligible and now fit.
For Morocco, this had been an exceptional effort from the likes of Amrabat, Hakim Ziyech and Sofiane Boufal. The centre-half Jawad El Yamiq, of Valladolid, had another one of the games of his life and hit the post with an overhead kick.
Regragui had named West Ham’s Nayef Aguerd in the first XI and then had to withdraw him before kick-off after he could not shake off illness. Romain Saiss, once of Wolverhampton Wanderers, was barely fit and would be substituted early.
“At a World Cup this was one step too far,” Regragui said later. “Physically we came up short. We had too many players at 60 per cent and have been for a few games now. You cannot win a World Cup with miracles.”
There had been moments in the first half when it looked like Morocco might be overwhelmed. WIth Saiss off they switched from five at the back to four. Olivier Giroud blocked the pass to Amrabat in midfield, and it was a struggle for Morocco in those early stages. But later, in the second half, they rallied. “We had a lot of possession,” Regragui reflected, “and they punished us when we lost the ball”
France caught them early with a ball circulated left to right and down the right channel to the excellent Antoine Griezmann who turned El Yamiq and cut it back for Mbappe. He was unable to get a clean shot off but the deflected hit fell high and awkward at the back post for Hernandez and he finished beautifully, first time, with his left foot. Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate came in for Upamecano and did well enough to keep his place for the final.
When Morocco did find a way through the France press they were dangerous. Their right side is their strongest with Chelsea’s Ziyech and the Paris St-Germain full-back Achraf Hakimi behind him. Ziyech’s delivery from corners and free-kicks during a period of pressure at the end of the first half was of a high quality.
Regragui’s side were never out of it. Deschamps’ changes were decisive in the end. Thuram came on down the left and re-energised that side. Mbappe went to the centre and it was him who created the goal, bursting past one defender and immediately drawing three into him. His shot was deflected but it fell perfectly at the back post to Kolo Muani, the Eintracht Frankfurt striker who had been on the pitch just 44 seconds, to score the second.

We gave the maximum, that's the most important. We had some injuries, we lost Aguerd in the warm-up, Saiss, Mazraoui... but there are no excuses.
We paid for the slightest mistake. We didn't get into the game well, we had too much technical waste in the first half, and the second goal kills us, but that doesn't take away everything we did before.
It will be difficult on the mental level [to prepare for Saturday's third/fourth play-off]. I will give opportunities to those who did not participate, and we will try to clinch the third place.
The important thing is that we presented a good look to our team, and that soccer in Morocco is not far from the top levels.

France's second goal has taken a little air out of the incredibly passionate Moroccan fans. It owed everything to Kylian Mbappe's quick feet - and a slice of luck as his shot deflected into the path of substitute Randal Kolo Muani. Morocco will feel incredibly hard done by. It has been a brilliant effort by them summed up by that fantastic tackle on Mbappe by Sofyan Amrabat. But they finally look beaten.

Emmanuel Macron is one of the few French fans inside the stadium. The French president has flown in for this semi-final but the Al Bayt stadium is packed to the rafters with Moroccans. They are making an incredible noise – whistling every time France have possession and even resorting to the Iceland 'thunder clap' to get behind their team who have done well since conceding the early goal. Thousands more made the trek north from Doha even though they did not have tickets and are watching the match from the car parks and on big screens.

Benzema back?!
There was an interesting story on Marca last night which reported that Karim Benzema, who was ruled out of the tournament on the eve of its opening day with a torn left thigh muscle, returned to training with Real Madrid on Saturday. (Incidentally, Cristiano Ronaldo has also been training with Real Madrid this week). Marca and The Sun note that should France make it to Sunday's final, because Benzema was not replaced in the France squad as Didier Deschamps decided to persevere with 25, he would be eligible to play ... if required.

The first World Cup semi-final to ever involve an African team is nearly upon us, with Morocco facing its former coloniser France.
Morocco have exceeded all expectations this tournament, clinching their place in the semi-final with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Portugal. That was only the fourth time that an African team had reached the quarter-final of the tournament, after Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana.
Before their quarter-final victory, Morocco beat Spain on penalties after a 0-0 draw, which confirmed their best ever World Cup performance. In the group stage, Morocco drew with Croatia, before beating Belgium and Canada to progress to the knockout stages.
It could also be a historic game for France, as they aim to become only the fifth side to play in back-to-back World Cup finals. If they win the tournament, they would become the third team to clinch back-to-back titles. Italy won the tournament in 1934 and 1938, while Brazil did the same in 1958 and 1962.
They ground out a 2-1 win over England in the last match, with Olivier Giroud and Aurélien Tchouaméni scoring the goals. They saw off Poland relatively easily in the Round of 16 after losing to Tunisia in their final group match – although they did field a much-changed team. They had already beaten Australia and Denmark to reach the group stages.
The big concern for the North African side is the fitness of their defenders. West Ham centre-back Nayef Aguerd missed the Portugal game with a thigh injury and captain Romain Saiss, who joined Besiktas from Wolves in the summer, was forced off in the second half. Bayern Munich full-back Noussair Mazraoui also missed the quarter-final clash, but could be back in contention. Forward Walid Cheddira is suspended after he was sent off against Portugal.
For France, Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano and Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot are injury doubts. The pair only completed light training on Tuesday.
