Postgame review: Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars come up short on final drive at Jets

One day after Christmas, the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets meet in Week 16, a matchup of teams near the bottom of the standings and near the top of the projected order for the 2022 NFL Draft. The Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence and the Jets' Zach Wilson, the top two selections from the 2021 draft, face off in an anticipated battle of rookie quarterbacks. Coaches are also in the spotlight: Darrell Bevell leads the Jaguars for the second time after the midseason firing of Urban Meyer, while Ron Middleton directs the Jets on the field with head coach Robert Saleh unavailable due to COVID-19 protocols.

6:30 p.m. | Big Boy touchdowns: Jaguars' Will Richardson, Jets' Conor McDermott crack the end zone for their teams

The first-and-goal play from the New York Jets' 4-yard line on Sunday early in the second quarter didn't exactly come off as scripted and Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was a bit red-faced about it.

But the outcome was still a Jaguars touchdown and Lawrence said it warms a quarterback's heart when one of the big guys up front charged with keeping him upright can get a slice of glory.

5:55 p.m. | Kick coverage far from special for Jaguars

Nothing kills momentum in the NFL like scoring, then giving up a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. The Jaguars have done that twice in the last two games. | Read more --Garry Smits

4:12 p.m. | FINAL: New York Jets 26, Jacksonville 21

Another loss for the Jags.

4:10 p.m. | One yard short: Jags turn over on downs

So close. Trevor Lawrence led a near-perfect drive, including a scramble down to the 5. But he threw away on first down, had a near-pick caught by Marvin Jones at the 1 on second down and, with no timeouts, spiked the ball on third down. The fourth-down attempt fell incomplete.

It's going to be another loss.

4:00 p.m. | Eddy Pineiro kicks another field goal for Jets

It's another score for the Jets, but thanks to a firm tackle at the 1 from Andre Cisco, it isn't a touchdown. The Jets sent on Eddy Pineiro for a 20-yard field goal. Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars will get one more chance.

Jets 26, Jaguars 21, 1:47 4th.

3:52 p.m. | Jets draining clock

This one is almost in the books. Braxton Berrios came through with another clutch catch on third down, holding on despite the big Andre Cisco hit, and then Michael Carter took off for the long run inside the 10. Just 2:10 to go and the Jaguars are in trouble.

3:39 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars, 2-point try fails

This one isn't finished. As the drops continue for the Jaguars, Trevor Lawrence nonetheless advanced the ball into the red zone with help from another Jets defensive pass interference flag. Dare Ogunbowale made the Jets pay, plowing into the end zone from 1 yard.

The Jaguars went for two points and the tie, but the Jets' pass rush got into the backfield in a hurry and forced Lawrence into an off-balance throw that fell incomplete. Will the Jags get the football back today?

Jets 23, Jaguars 21, 5:25 4th.

3:28 p.m. | Touchdown Jets: Another lineman scores in wild game

It's getting weird out there.

The Jets drove into the red zone, only to be denied on second down (Roy Robertson-Harris stacked up Tevin Coleman) and on third (a terrific tackle by Oakleaf graduate Shaq Quarterman at the 1). New York tried again on fourth down, and it paid off: Zach Wilson escaped pressure in the backfield and threw for tackle Conor McDermott, an eligible receiver, for the leaping catch. That's two touchdowns for O-linemen today.

Jets 23, Jaguars 15, 9:16 4th.

3:15 p.m. | End of 3rd quarter: New York Jets 16, Jacksonville 15

One quarter left for the Jaguars to end their losing skid.

3:12 p.m. | Field goal: Matthew Wright cuts gap to 1

The drops keep coming, but the Jaguars turned their defensive stop into points. Matthew Wright converts another one for the Jags.

Jets 16, Jaguars 15, 0:25 3rd.

3:00 p.m. | Jets try fake field goal, Tyson Campbell stuffs it

A rookie to the rescue. After the turnover, the Jets advanced to the 6 on a Michael Carter run and a Tevin Coleman pass from Zach Wilson. But Jihad Ward sacked Wilson on third down, and on fourth down, the Jets called for a fake field goal with punter Braden Mann. Rookie cornerback Tyson Campbell downed Mann before he could turn the corner, and the Jaguars take over on downs at their own 4.

2:57 p.m. | Trevor Lawrence is strip-sacked

Can't do that. Trevor Lawrence comes under heavy pressure, retreats 20 yards into the backfield, gets sacked anyway by C.J. Mosley and loses the football. New York takes over at the Jaguars' 13.

2:50 p.m. | Field goal Jets: Eddy Pineiro is good from 42

Zach Wilson's receivers aren't always giving him a lot of help, but despite the occasional drop, the Jets' rookie quarterback led the New York offense deep into Jaguars territory. The drive stalled out, but this time the Jets didn't finish empty-handed, after Eddy Pineiro's 42-yard field goal.

Jets 16, Jaguars 12, 9:47 3rd.

2:43 p.m. | Second half kicks off

The Jaguars and Jets are set to resume. It'll be Zach Wilson and the New York offense getting the football first.

2:30 p.m. | HALFTIME: New York Jets 13, Jacksonville 12

That's halftime. The Jaguars have avoided penalties and have neutralized the Jets' passing game, but they still trail at the break.

2:29 p.m. | Shaq Griffin denies Jets on fourth down

That's a big stand for the Jaguars. Zach Wilson scrambled down inside the 10 for the Jets, but the Jaguars held off New York on four downs, with Shaq Griffin breaking up a pass to the end zone on fourth down.

1:59 p.m. | Field goal: Matthew Wright scores again for Jaguars

That was a better drive for the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence delivered several strikes downfield, including one to Tavon Austin as the Jags advanced into New York territory. But the potential home-run ball, a pass to the end zone for a wide-open Marvin Jones, fell incomplete when the veteran wideout appeared to lose the ball in the sun.

Two plays later, Matthew Wright came on to boot a 45-yard field goal through the uprights of the Meadowlands.

Jets 13, Jaguars 12, 8:15 2nd.

1:50 p.m. | Touchdown Jets: Braxton Berrios takes kickoff back 102 yards

That lead did not last. Braxton Berrios gets the kickoff and takes off, and the Jaguars' kickoff coverage unit can't do anything to stop the former Miami Hurricane from taking it 102 yards to the end zone.

Jets 13, Jaguars 9, 12:57 2nd.

1:46 p.m. | Jaguars RB James Robinson carted off with Achilles injury

1:43 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Will Richardson in right place at right time

Lineman Touchdown Alert. We repeat, Lineman Touchdown Alert.

Don't see this every day. After a long drive, including a pass to Laquon Treadwell inside the red zone, Trevor Lawrence rushed down to the 2 — where the football came loose. But right guard Will Richardson was alert to fall on the ball in the end zone for a Jaguars touchdown.

The Jets jumped offside on the extra point and Jaguars interim coach Darrell Bevell opted to go for two, but Dare Ogunbowale failed to get into the end zone.

Jaguars 9, Jets 6, 13:08 2nd.

1:41 p.m. | James Robinson out with Achilles tendon injury

Very bad news for Jaguars running back.

1:38 p.m. | End of 1st quarter: New York Jets 6, Jacksonville 3

That's the end of the first quarter, but Jaguars fans will be focused more on James Robinson's condition than on the scoreboard. The running back needed help to leave the field after his injury minutes ago.

1:30 p.m. | Jaguars RB James Robinson injured

More bad news for the Jaguars. James Robinson was standing in the backfield on a handoff to Tavon Austin when he went down without contact while taking his first step. Trainers are attending to the second-year running back.

1:26 p.m. | Touchdown Jets: Jaguars can't tackle Zach Wilson

The Jaguars hadn't led a game since Week 9 against Buffalo, and this lead didn't last long. Zach Wilson escaped a near-certain sack in the backfield, then scrambled around the right end and eluded multiple Jaguars tacklers — Rudy Ford and Andrew Wingard in particular — in a 52-yard run to the end zone.

Rookie safety Andre Cisco, making his first NFL start, had a couple of highlights on that drive for the Jaguars: a near-interception that was ruled incomplete after review, and a blocked PAT to keep the Jets from extending their edge.

Jets 6, Jaguars 3, 3:54 1st.

1:11 p.m. | Field goal: Matthew Wright puts Jags in front

This time, it's the Jaguars marching downfield with a long drive. After that Andrew Wingard fake punt, the Jacksonville offense kept the ball moving, with a Trevor Lawrence pass to James O'Shaughnessy and then a pass interference penalty inside the 10 as the main highlights.

Once they broke inside the 5, the Jaguars' offense stalled out. But they did score first, after Matthew Wright came on for the 21-yard field goal.

Jaguars 3, Jets 0, 8:12 1st.

1:05 p.m. | Fake punt: Jaguars convert to Andrew Wingard

That's a little bit different, and it worked. Faced with fourth-and-2 on their opening drive, Darrell Bevell lined up for the punt but called for the direct snap to Andrew Wingard, and the special-teamer plowed up the middle for a first down.

1:01 p.m. | Kickoff time

This game is underway in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Jaguars are receiving the opening kick.

12:45 p.m. | Source: Doug Pederson, Jim Caldwell among Jaguars coach candidates
