Postgame rewind: Jacksonville Jaguars stumble in red zone, lose to Kansas City Chiefs

The home opener for the 2023 NFL season is here for the Jacksonville Jaguars. They'll take on the Kansas City Chiefs at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17 inside EverBank Stadium, in a rematch of the divisional playoff in January that the Chiefs won on their way to the Super Bowl.

Among the major storylines is the status of the Chiefs' Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce, who missed the season-opening loss to Detroit because of a knee injury.

Sunday's game is also a matchup of high-profile quarterbacks, one already a two-time Super Bowl champion in Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes and another on the rise in the Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence.

Jaguars can't get going offensively in sloppy 17-9 loss to Chiefs. Here are our takeaways

FINAL: Chiefs 17, Jaguars 9

Plagued again by red-zone inefficiency on offense to spoil a quality outing from the defense, the Jaguars drop to 1-1. - Clayton Freeman

Around the AFC South: Titans top Chargers in OT

The Jaguars won't be in sole possession of first down after this game. The Titans have beaten the Chargers 27-24 in overtime in their game. - Clayton Freeman

Two-minute warning: Chiefs convert key third down

This one is almost in the books. On third down, Patrick Mahomes escaped pressure and rolled right, floating a pass over coverage to an open Skyy Moore to advance inside the 15. Officials issued offsetting penalties after the play, including a second 15-yard penalty involving Travis Kelce, but the conversion stands. With 1:46 to go, the Chiefs have almost clinched this one. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars' drive stalls in red zone yet again

Another red-zone breakdown for the Jaguars ends a promising drive. Evan Engram launched himself acrobatically across the first-down line at the 25 for a crucial conversion, but things deteriorated once they crossed the 20. Chris Jones hit Trevor Lawrence on third down, leading to a lateral that bounced out of bounds. On fourth and 12 from the 16, Lawrence's pass to Calvin Ridley carried him out of the back of the end zone -- the team's fourth pass of the game caught beyond the white line. With 4:16 to go and a 17-9 deficit, the Jags are running out of time. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal Chiefs: Kansas City drives inside 10, Jags limit damage

A strong drive for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense broke down inside the 20, with the latest Jawaan Taylor penalty -- he's up to five on the day. Harrison Butker arrived to boot a 38-yard field goal, and the Jaguars now trail by eight.

Field goal Jaguars: After first-and-goal at 1, Jags settle for three

Missed opportunity there for the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence looked for the back of the end zone for Zay Jones, who couldn't come down in bounds. Then, after defensive pass interference gave the Jaguars possession at the 1, Lawrence had three unsuccessful plays: he was downed by L'Jarius Sneed on a bootleg for a loss of 3, missed high for Calvin Ridley on second down and missed way high for Zay Jones on third down. Brandon McManus came on for the 21-yard field goal.

Chiefs 14, Jaguars 9, 13:43 4th. - Clayton Freeman

End of third quarter: Chiefs 14, Jaguars 6

Kansas City leads entering the fourth quarter, but the Jaguars are driving after a 45-yard bomb from Trevor Lawrence to Christian Kirk. They're on the move inside the Chiefs' red zone. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars' offense continues to struggle

The Jaguars' offense just can't find a rhythm. Travis Etienne is getting few holes and the Chiefs are creating lots of problems when Trevor Lawrence throws, with Chris Jones swatting down a third-down attempt. The Jags wanted a pass interference flag on second down, but officials ruled Lawrence's pass was deflected prior to the hold. With 3:45 left in Q3, the Jags are running out of time to make up an eight-point deficit. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes opens with long drive, TD to Travis Kelce

The Chiefs couldn't find a rhythm on offense in the first half, but they changed that quickly after the break. Patrick Mahomes made that drive look easy, finishing it off with a floating pass to Travis Kelce in the end zone.

Chiefs 14, Jaguars 6, 11:30 3rd.

Second half kicks off

Back to action at the Bank. The Chiefs will receive, leading the Jaguars 7-6.

HALFTIME: Brandon McManus converts long field goal for Jaguars

That's the best Jaguars drive of the day. With only seconds to use, Trevor Lawrence marched the Jaguars across midfield, thanks to a flying catch from Calvin Ridley at the Kansas City 38. That set up Brandon McManus for a 49-yard field goal attempt for the Jags, narrowing the gap to a single point.

Chiefs 7, Jaguars 6, :00 2nd.

Touchdown Chiefs: Skyy Moore lifts visitors into lead

The Chiefs made that turnover on downs count. Patrick Mahomes converted a fourth-down play of his own, and then went to work to find tight ends Travis Kelce and Noah Gray. From there, a 9-yard strike to Skyy Moore gave the Chiefs their first lead. The Jaguars have to find some life on offense.

Chiefs 7, Jaguars 3, 0:27 2nd.

Chris Jones sacks Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars turn over on downs

The Jaguars went for another fourth down, and it didn't work: Chris Jones wrapped up Trevor Lawrence on fourth down and Kansas City will take over at midfield. The defenses have been dominant so far.

Interception! Third Jags takeaway of quarter as Andre Cisco picks off Patrick Mahomes

What a quarter for the Jaguars' defense. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes throws deep while getting walloped by Josh Allen on the Jacksonville pass rush, and safety Andre Cisco jumps high for the interception. In effect, the deep pass turns into something a lot like a punt. Three takeaways for the D.

Fumble! Jaguars lose the ball on next play after botched lateral

That possession didn't last long. On the first play, Trevor Lawrence aimed a lateral for Jamal Agnew, but he couldn't hold on and corner L'Jarius Sneed recovered for Kansas City. Officials originally called it incomplete, but Andy Reid successfully challenged that the pass was backward. Chiefs football at the 41.

Fumble! Jaguars force a second turnover

That's two takeaways in this quarter for the Jaguars. Kansas City had crossed midfield when Darious Williams chased down Justin Watson from behind, stripping the ball for Foye Oluokun to recover. Travis Kelce picked up a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play, too, leaving Jacksonville in prime position.

Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus converts turnover to points

Trevor Lawrence said Zay Jones caught the ball in the end zone. So did Jaxson de Ville. But the officials didn't, and when the third-down pass carried the receiver out of bounds in the back of the end zone, the Jaguars settled for a 32-yard Brandon McManus field goal for an early lead.

Jaguars 3, Chiefs 0, 12:59 2nd.

Turnover! Chiefs muff punt, Jaguars recover

The first big play of this one. Logan Cooke aimed a perfect punt that got lost in the sun, whacking return man Richie James in the helmet, and Tim Jones recovered for Jacksonville at the Chiefs' 17.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: Chiefs 0, Jaguars 0

That's the end of the first quarter. The Jags have fourth and 2 at their own 33 when play resumes. The ground game hasn't been able to open many holes for Travis Etienne so far.

Tommy Townsend punt pins Jaguars at own 1

The Jaguars have had some trouble early tackling Kadarius Toney in the open field. Short passes to the elusive wideout helped Kansas City advance across midfield. But a holding flag on offensive tackle Donovan Smith nullified a third-down conversion from Patrick Mahomes to Travis Kelce, and the Chiefs elected to punt from the 38. Tommy Townsend pinned the Jags back at their 1 with his punt.

Trevor Lawrence surpasses 8,000 career passing yards

A stat milestone alert for the Jaguars' third-year QB on the opening drive. Lawrence led the team across midfield on the opening drive, but he couldn't connect on a pass just in front of Calvin Ridley and then got sacked by George Karlaftis on third down. That means a punt.
