Nicholls football upsets Incarnate Word, in driver's seat for Southland championship

Nicholls football went on the road Saturday afternoon and shocked No. 8 Incarnate Word, as the Colonels upset the Cardinals 45-32 in a Southland Conference game.

Nicholls receiver Arron McKenney (14) leads the Colonels on the field during a game against Houston Baptist in Thibodaux on Oct. 2.

The offense was led by star senior Colin Guggenheim, who added to his legendary career by rushing for 153 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Devonte' Mathews had possibly his finest game of the season, recovering a fumble by UIW (7-2, 4-1) and returning it for a touchdown in the third quarter, then intercepting a pass on the Cardinals' final offensive play.

Perhaps more importantly, Nicholls (4-4, 4-0 Southland) controls its own destiny for the Southland Conference championship. A win next Saturday against Lamar would clinch the title — and a spot in the FCS playoffs — for the Colonels.
